The sci-fi action film "Spider-Man: No Way Home" picks up directly after the events of the previous film, in which Spider-Man's identity is revealed to the world and he is falsely portrayed as a murderer. This causes major problems for Peter Parker, his girlfriend MJ and his best friend Ned, who suffer from the public accusations and even fail at college applications. In desperation, Peter seeks out Dr. Stephen Strange to cast a spell that will make the world forget his identity. Despite warnings, Strange agrees, but when Peter interferes with the spell, things go wrong. As a result, villains from other universes appear who know that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, including familiar foes such as Dr. Otto Octavius (Doc Ock) and the Green Goblin. Peter, MJ and Ned try to deal with this unexpected situation and send the villains back to their respective realities, leading to dangerous confrontations and difficult decisions. The presence of these villains from other worlds has unforeseen consequences and forces Peter to face his responsibilities as Spider-Man in a whole new way.

Background

The production of "Spider-Man: No Way Home" was the result of a complex agreement between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures. Even before the first film with Tom Holland, there were plans for a trilogy. After initial difficulties in the collaboration, both studios were able to agree on a new deal in September 2019, which saw Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal as producers and ensured that the film became part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, who had already written the scripts for the previous films, returned, and Jon Watts once again took over as director. In addition to the well-known actors Tom Holland, Zendaya and Jacob Batalon, Jamie Foxx as Electro and Alfred Molina as Dr. Octopus also returned to their roles from previous Spider-Man films.

A particular surprise was the involvement of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, who reprised their respective incarnations of Spider-Man from previous film series. The film was mainly shot at Trilith Studios and Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, with Mauro Fiore directing the camera.

The theatrical release was postponed several times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but finally took place in December 2021. The film was a huge commercial success. It grossed USD 260 million in the United States alone on its first weekend and exceeded the USD 1 billion mark in international revenue just twelve days after its premiere. By the end of April 2022, worldwide revenue amounted to around 1.9 billion US dollars, making it one of the most successful films of all time.
