Rome at a time of political discord: Gaius Julis Caesar is in Gaul, where he successfully ends his long-running battle for Galia. Meanwhile, Rome is ruled by an increasingly divided Senate and Caesar's influential friend and rival Pompey. When the Senate demands that Pompey turn against his friend Caesar, he refuses. Appearances are deceptive, however, because behind the scenes the battle between Pompey and Caesar for power over the capital of the Roman Empire has long since begun. One side is trying to eliminate the other through political intrigue and power games and no move made by the two highly strategic men ultimately serves its initial and superficial appearance.
