Twelve years after the theatrical release of "Edge of Tomorrow," there is new speculation about a sequel. Hollywood insider Daniel Richtman says he has heard that "Edge of Tomorrow 2" is moving forward. What's more, according to Richtman, filming for the sci-fi sequel could begin as early as this coming fall. However, he hasn't provided any further details – not even whether the original leads, Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, are back on board.

In any case, the report should be considered mere speculation at this point and taken with a grain of salt. What is certain, however, is that a sequel has been discussed for years – and the return of the two lead actors, Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, has always been expected. Two years ago, for example, "Edge of Tomorrow" director Doug Liman confirmed to the film magazine Empire that he was still in talks with Tom Cruise about making a sequel. And as early as 2016, Liman already mentioned that a second installment was in the works. Speaking with the website Collider at the time, he declared that the story of "Edge of Tomorrow 2" was even better than that of the first film. He also revealed:

"It's a sequel that's a prequel."

Edge of Tomorrow: Tom Cruise is stuck in a time loop

Liman's seemingly paradoxical statement could have to do with the premise of the "Edge of Tomorrow" story. In the 2014 sci-fi action film, Major William Cage, played by Tom Cruise, is stuck in a time loop. He must defend himself against hostile aliens and dies – over and over again. In that sense, the simultaneity of sequel and prequel hinted at by Liman could suggest that the temporal structure in a sequel to "Edge of Tomorrow" might be even more paradoxical than in the original.

In any case, it will be a challenge to surpass the quality of the first film. When "Edge of Tomorrow" hit theaters twelve years ago, its financial success was limited. The film did gross $381 million at the global box office. However, the production budget was a hefty $178 million, meaning those in charge had certainly expected far higher revenues. The first installment of "Edge of Tomorrow" is based on the Japanese novel "All You Need Is Kill" by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. The screenplay was written by Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth, and Christopher McQuarrie. Over the years, McQuarrie has collaborated with Tom Cruise on numerous other projects, such as writing the screenplay for the aviation blockbuster "Top Gun: Maverick" and as director of the latest "Mission: Impossible" films. In addition to Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, the cast of "Edge of Tomorrow" also included Bill Paxton, Brendan Gleeson, Noah Taylor, Kick Gurry, Dragomir Mrsic, Charlotte Riley, Jonas Armstrong, Franz Drameh, Masayoshi Haneda, Tony Way, and Lara Pulver.

If "Edge of Tomorrow 2" also involves a time loop, the sequel would be in good company. Just recently, "Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die" was released – a sci-fi film in which the hero is also stuck in a time loop. In that film, Sam Rockwell plays a time traveler who must relive the same day 116 times while trying to prevent an apocalyptic future. And next year, another star-studded sci-fi film centered on a time loop is already on the way. In "Shiver," Keanu Reeves plays the beleaguered hero: as a smuggler, he finds himself stranded in the Caribbean Sea after a mission gone wrong. There, he has to contend with enemy mercenaries and sharks – over and over again.

The negative headlines surrounding Kevin Costner's Western series "Horizon" just won't stop. After Part 1 proved to be a catastrophic flop at the box office, "Horizon 2" is now also up in the air. As reported by World of Reel magazine, there is currently no release date for the sequel. Yet "Horizon 2" was already screened at the Venice Film Festival in 2024.

Behind the scenes, the situation appears to be far more dramatic. Costner is facing a lawsuit over unpaid costume rentals totaling over $400,000. Far more serious, however, is the accusation by a stuntwoman who accuses the star of sexual harassment and retaliation in connection with a rape scene not included in the script.

Nevertheless, Costner stubbornly refuses to give up on his dream of a four-part saga. To secure funding for the third and fourth installments, he even sought support from investors in Saudi Arabia on multiple occasions last year. There is also hope for his own $100 million film studio in Utah.

Development of the live-action adaptation of Disney's animated film "Tangled" continues to move forward. With Diego Luna, a "Star Wars" actor is now joining the cast of "Tangled". According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, the "Andor" star will take on a role created specifically for the live-action adaptation.

No further details about Diego Luna's character have been provided. It is also unclear whether he will sing in the "Rapunzel" film, which, like the animated original, is set to feature musical numbers. In any case, Michael Gracey, a director with prior experience in musical films, is at the helm. He previously directed "The Greatest Showman" in 2017 and "Better Man" in 2024.

Known from Star Wars: Diego Luna is celebrated for his role in Andor

Diego Luna joins the cast as an actor who already has numerous film and television roles under his belt. He is currently appearing in the film "Kiss of the Spider Woman" alongside Hollywood star Jennifer Lopez. Among his most notable roles is certainly the one in "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story." In the 2016 film, he was first seen in the role of Cassian Andor, a character he also portrayed a few years later in the series prequel "Andor." The first season aired in 2022, followed by the second in 2025. His character became the linchpin of a highly acclaimed series that is considered among the best the long-running "Star Wars" franchise has to offer – and helped earn Diego Luna even more acclaim from critics and audiences alike.

Other cast members in the Rapunzel remake

In addition to Diego Luna, several other cast members have already been confirmed. Among them are the two actors who will play the protagonists Rapunzel and Flynn Rider. The princess with the very special hair, who is forced to live her life in a tower, is played by Teagan Croft. The thief Flynn Rider, who becomes her ally over the course of the film, is portrayed by Milo Manheim. Kathryn Hahn will also play a central role. The actress, who made a name for herself as Agatha Harkness in the Marvel series "Agatha All Along," among other roles, has been cast as the antagonist Gothel. Previously, "Black Widow" star Scarlett Johansson had been in talks for the role.

Kristin Burr will produce the film. Through her work on "Cruella," she already has experience producing a live-action film based on a Disney animated feature. The screenplay is written by Michael Montemayor and Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. The latter most recently co-wrote the 2025 version of the horror film "I Know What You Did Last Summer." Filming for the live-action adaptation of "Tangled" is set to begin soon. Production is scheduled to start as early as this coming June in Spain. Valencia, Alicante, Girona, and Burgos have been named as filming locations.

A short break for Rapunzel

The original animated film was released in 2010 and is based on the "Rapunzel" fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. The screenplay was written by Dan Fogelman. It was directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard. "Tangled" grossed $607 million at the global box office. That's a considerable sum, so it's no surprise that, given the many live-action adaptations from Disney, this animated film was also selected for a remake. However, in 2025 the planned adaptation has reportedly been put on hold for the time being. The hiatus followed the poor performance of the live-action adaptation of "Snow White," which fell far short of expectations with a box office haul of $205 million.

Later that same year, however, another Disney live-action adaptation, "Lilo & Stitch," hit theaters – and with worldwide earnings of over $1 billion, it proved to be a massive success. Development of the "Rapunzel" remake was subsequently resumed. Whether the film can replicate the triumph of "Lilo & Stitch," however, remains to be seen.

The new "Narnia" movie won't be coming out this year after all! In a major announcement, Netflix has both good and bad news in store for "Narnia" fans. The release of "Narnia: The Magician's Nephew" has been pushed back. At the same time, however, the streaming service also announced a full theatrical release.

Previously, it was only known that the film by "Barbie" director Greta Gerwig would have a limited release in IMAX theaters. However, we'll have to wait a few months longer than originally planned before we can experience the "Narnia" film on the big screen. According to Deadline, the delay is reportedly due to an actor's injury, which slowed down production and made it impossible to meet the initial release date.

Release dates for theaters and Netflix revealed

Instead of Thanksgiving, the theatrical release is now scheduled for February 12, 2027. Sneak previews in IMAX theaters will begin two days earlier, on February 10. A little over a month and a half later, "Narnia: The Magician's Nephew" will be available to stream on Netflix. The film will be released there on April 2, 2027.

Here's what The Magician's Nephew is about

Author C. S. Lewis published the novel on which the upcoming film is based in 1955. "The Magician's Nephew" tells the origin story of the famous world of Narnia. Chronologically, the new film is set before the well-known Disney adaptations "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe", "Prince Caspian," and "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader."

The two children, Digory and Polly, are transported to other dimensions through Digory's uncle's experiments and witness the lion Aslan creating the world of Narnia with his song. On their journey, they also encounter the White Witch. The novel combines adventure with an origin story and lays the foundation for the entire "Narnia" series. However, it is not yet known exactly how closely the film will follow the source material. Regarding the plot, Netflix has only released this statement:

"Academy Award–nominated filmmaker Greta Gerwig brings C. S. Lewis's beloved story The Magician's Nephew to the screen for the first time in a sweeping adventure that invites dreamers of all ages to experience the creation of Narnia."

Most of the cast has now been officially confirmed. The film centers on two newcomers: David McKenna as Digory and Beatrice Campbell as Polly. They're joined by a wealth of acting experience, including longtime "James Bond" actor Daniel Craig and Hollywood legend Meryl Streep. Craig is rumored to play Digory's uncle, while Meryl Streep is in talks to voice Aslan.

The White Witch will be portrayed by "Sex Education" star Emma Mackey. In the Disney films, she was portrayed by Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton. Also cast for the Netflix adaptation are "Drive" star Carey Mulligan and "Game of Thrones" actor Ciarán Hinds. The ensemble is rounded out by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith ("The Gorge"), Denise Gough ("Andor"), and Susan Wokoma ("Enola Holmes").

Greta Gerwig will not only direct the film but is also responsible for the screenplay. Gerwig spoke about her special connection to Lewis's "Chronicles of Narnia." She explains what particularly appeals to her about the story and the world of Narnia.

You don't really learn anything, but you find yourself thinking: I'd love to find out more about this oddball. When a first, unreleased trailer recently offered further glimpses of Tom Cruise's character at CinemaCon, Variety described him as an "insane, cat-loving billionaire with a big belly, a comb over and a thick southern accent."

When Iñárritu's new film Digger hits theaters

In a few months at the latest, we'll finally know what Digger Rockwell is all about: "Digger" hits theaters on October 2, 2026. Alongside "Top Gun" star Tom Cruise, the cast includes a number of other well-known actors. Among them are Jesse Plemons, Riz Ahmed, Sophie Wilde, Emma D'Arcy, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Robert John Burke, Burn Gorman, and Sandra Hüller. The latter is clearly establishing herself more and more in Hollywood. While she is currently enjoying success in the sci-fi blockbuster "Project Hail Mary" alongside Hollywood star Ryan Gosling, Hüller has landed her next prestigious project with "Digger," which will also be seen by a global audience.

For the film, Alejandro G. Iñárritu is not only serving as director and co-writer, but also as a producer alongside Tom Cruise and Mary Parent. The production budget allocated for "Digger" is reported to be $125 million. That's a hefty sum, especially considering the film isn't part of a franchise. The fact that they're willing to take that risk, however, gives a hint of just how much they're banking on the collaboration between Iñárritu and Cruise.

Digger could earn Tom Cruise his first Oscar for Best Actor

For Cruise, the film could be a career highlight. There is already speculation as to whether the role of Digger Rockwell could finally earn him that long-awaited Oscar. Shortly after the theatrical release of "Michael," plans for a second film about Michael Jackson are apparently already considered. Speculation about a sequel to director Antoine Fuqua's biopic was already circulating before the film had even been released. But now, one of the key figures behind the project has spoken out about the potential sequel on Matthew Belloni's podcast "The Town": Adam Fogelson, who serves as film chair at the production company Lionsgate. His answer suggests that a lot would have to happen for the expected sequel not to materialize. Nevertheless, there is still no official confirmation or concrete announcement. In any case, Fogelson remained relatively vague regarding the possible plans for a second installment. "There is a massive amount of music, some of his greatest music, and life experiences separate and apart from allegations – a ton of it – that would fill more than a second movie on its own."

What the first Michael Jackson film is about
