Production of the Netflix film starring Sydney Sweeney has begun!
A major step forward for the "Gundam" live-action film! It has been known for some time that a large-scale film adaptation based on the cult anime "Mobile Suit Gundam" is in development. Netflix is one of the companies behind the project. In a detailed announcement, the streaming service has now revealed the cast, while also sharing first details about the plot. Production on the film has officially begun!
The Cast of the Gundam Movie
Leading the cast are "The Housemaid" star Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo. Centineo is known for his roles in the Dwayne Johnson film "Black Adam" and the Netflix series "The Recruit," among others. Sweeney and Centineo are set to portray the lead characters, though details about their roles are still unknown.
Also part of the cast are Shioli Kutsuna ("Deadpool & Wolverine"), "Tell Me Lies" actor Jackson White, and "Better Call Saul" star Michael Mando. The production has also secured an experienced Hollywood name with Jason Isaacs. Isaacs most recently appeared in the third season of "The White Lotus" and is best known for his role as Lucius Malfoy in the "Harry Potter" films.
Rounding out the ensemble are Nonso Anozie ("Sweet Tooth"), Javon Walton ("Under the Bridge"), Gemma Chua-Tran ("Heartbreak High"), Oleksandr Rudynskyi ("The Agency"), and Ida Brooke ("Dune 3"). Directing the film is Jim Mickle, known among other things as the series creator of the Netflix production "Sweet Tooth".
Here's what the Gundam movie is about
The "Gundam" movie is not intended to be a mere remake – rather, it aims to tell a new story. Netflix released the following plot description:
[The story] follows rival mech pilots fighting on opposite sides of decades-long war between Earth and its space former colonies. As shifting allegiances and a growing threat set them on a collision course for one another, they're pulled into a high-stakes race across the stars that could define the fate of humanity.
When will the Gundam movie be released?
For now, it remains unclear when the "Gundam" film will be released. Since production has finally begun, we can hope for a 2027 release. But that's not certain, as extensive post-production is also likely. A theatrical release is apparently not planned – instead, the film is expected to premiere on Netflix. We'll keep you updated as more information becomes available.
The Gundam Franchise
This project marks the first live-action adaptation of the "Mobile Suit Gundam" universe. The franchise originated in 1979 with the anime series of the same name. At the heart of the original story is an interstellar war fought using giant combat machines – the so-called Mobile Suits.
The World of Mobile Suit Gundam
The world of "Gundam" combines spectacular robot battles with political conflicts, moral gray areas, and human destinies. At the heart of many "Gundam" stories is a futuristic scenario in which humanity has colonized space. Unlike many earlier mecha series, Gundam does not rely solely on heroic battles but portrays war as a complex, often tragic event with profound consequences for everyone involved.
A hallmark of the franchise are the eponymous "Mobile Suits" – giant, humanoid combat machines controlled by pilots. The most famous of these machines is arguably the RX-78-2 Gundam from the original series, which quickly became a cultural icon. But just as important as the technology are the characters themselves: young, often inexperienced protagonists find themselves caught up in conflicts that force them to take on responsibility and question their own moral convictions.
Over the decades, "Gundam" has grown far beyond the original anime. In addition to numerous series and films, the franchise also includes manga, novels, and video games. The universe continues to evolve, addressing new themes and appealing to new audiences. Among the more recent releases is the Netflix production "Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance."
The Movies and Series Starring Sydney Sweeney
Sydney Sweeney is currently one of Hollywood's most sought-after actresses. Her breakthrough came with the HBO series "Euphoria," in which she plays Cassie Howard. She was also part of the cast of the first season of "The White Lotus." She took on a leading role in the romantic comedy "Anyone But You," which turned out to be a surprise hit at the box office. Following roles in films like "Immaculate" and "Madame Web," she most recently enjoyed great success with the film adaptation of "The Housemaid," for which a sequel is already in development. The "Gundam" film marks the next step in her Hollywood career.
The "Gundam" live-action film is, of course, by no means the only planned live-action adaptation of an anime. Several other projects are currently in development – from "Solo Leveling" to "Naruto." Filming for "Naruto" could even begin as early as this year. In our comprehensive preview, you'll get an overview of the currently planned live-action adaptations.
