It has been known for a while now that a new film from a galaxy far, far away awaits us with "Star Wars: Starfighter". Now that some new actors have been confirmed, a brand new image of the Ryan Gosling film has been released.

In the set photo, Gosling can be seen with his young co-star Flynn Gray. Overall, the setting of the photo looks rather atypical for "Star Wars". Director Shawn Levy shared the picture on his social media channels with the words "Somewhere in the Mediterranean Sea". Filming is currently taking place there. A set photo of the two actors on a kind of speeder in black and white was recently published.

Starfighter" is a standalone "Star Wars" film, seperate of the well-known Skywalker saga. It will be set five years after the events of "Episode IX". In addition to Ryan Gosling, Hollywood star Amy Adams and "Rebel Ridge" actor Aaron Pierre have been cast. Other cast members include Mia Goth and "House of the Dragon" actor Matt Smith. The theatrical release of "Star Wars: Starfighter" is scheduled for May 28, 2027.

The Mandalorian & Grogu: Star Wars returns to the movies as early as 2026

Another "Star Wars" film awaits us even before "Starfighter": after several years on the series screen, Din Djarin (aka Mando) and Grogu (Baby Yoda) will return to the big screen for the first time in 2026 with "The Mandalorian & Grogu". The film marks the first "Star Wars" movie since "Episode IX" and aims to get the franchise back on track – with familiar characters and a proven creative team.

Successful duo Mando & Grogu

Hardly any "Star Wars" project has been as successful in recent years as "The Mandalorian". The series, set between Episodes VI and VII, tells the story of the bounty hunter Din Djarin, who protects a Force-sensitive child – Grogu. This developed into one of the most popular dynamics in modern "Star Wars".

"The Mandalorian" launched an entire series universe. This was followed by other productions such as "The Book of Boba Fett" and "Ahsoka". The use of the innovative StageCraft technology, which creates virtual backdrops in real time, was also historic in "The Mandalorian". Nevertheless, there was still some criticism, as the staging seemed limited at times.

What does the trailer show?

A first trailer was already shown at the Star Wars Celebration in Japan. However, it was only shown on site and has not yet been released to a wider audience. The story of "The Mandalorian" is set directly after season 3. Din Djarin now works as a bounty hunter for the New Republic, with Grogu still at his side. Part of the movie is apparently set on an ice planet. Among other things, the trailer showed Mando fighting the crew of an AT-AT.

Familiar faces & new stars

The trailer confirms an appearance of Zeb Orrelios, known from "Star Wars: Rebels". Zeb already made a cameo appearance in "The Mandalorian". It is of course also possible that characters such as Ahsoka Tano, Bo-Katan or the mysterious armorer could return. Greef Karga, on the other hand, will not play a role – actor Carl Weathers sadly passed away in 2024.

New to the cast: Sigourney Weaver as a commander of the New Republic and Jeremy Allen White, who voices Jabba the Hutt's son Rotta. Jon Favreau is once again directing, assisted by writer Dave Filoni, the creative mind behind many modern "Star Wars" productions. Together they are apparently planning a big "Mando-Verse" finale in the cinema. "The Mandalorian & Grogu" could now be the prelude to this.

What will happen to season 4?

It is still unclear whether there will be a fourth season of "The Mandalorian". Insiders suspect that central storylines from a planned fourth season have now been transferred to the film.

Theatrical release

"The Mandalorian & Grogu" will be released in cinemas on May 22, 2026. Filming was already completed in 2024 – enough time for an elaborate post-production. Expectations are high: for Disney and Lucasfilm, the film is an important test to win back fans – with characters they love. We are excited to see how Mando & Grogu will fare in their first cinematic adventure.
