Sydney Sweeney in the Gundam live-action film
A "Rambo" actor also joins the cast
Giant robots and a good beating! Netflix is working on a live-action adaptation of the cult series "Gundam" – and none other than Sydney Sweeney has been cast for a leading role.
Sweeney, known from "Euphoria" among others, will play a character who initially finds herself in a conflict between two rival factions. However, it was previously unclear who her partner would be. After singer Benson Boone and "Outer Banks" actor Drew Starkey were already under discussion, The Hollywood Reporter is now reporting a new candidate: Noah Centineo.
Centineo gained attention primarily through the Netflix romance series "To All the Boys I've Loved Before". He is also set to appear as a young John Rambo in a prequel and has a role in the upcoming "Street Fighter" film, which will be released in October 2026.
'Gundam' is being directed by Jim Mickle, who was already responsible for "Sweet Tooth" as showrunner. He will also write the screenplay. Jordan Vogt-Roberts was originally set to direct the live-action adaptation. A start date has yet to be set.
Sydney Sweeney: The projects that made her a Hollywood star
In recent years, Sydney Sweeney has developed from an ambitious young talent into one of the most dynamic and versatile actresses of her generation. With a mixture of emotional depth, extraordinary charisma and a remarkably broad range of roles, she has made a name for herself in both major series productions and film projects. A look at her most important works shows why she is one of the most sought-after stars in Hollywood today.
Euphoria: The international breakthrough
Sweeney's biggest career boost undoubtedly came with her role as Cassie Howard in "Euphoria". The acclaimed HBO series is considered one of the most influential teen drama productions of the past decade. Sweeney's portrayal of the sensitive, often torn Cassie was praised worldwide and made her a much-acclaimed actress overnight. Particularly impressive was her ability to portray Cassie's inner conflict between longing for love, self-esteem issues and emotional dependency in a believable and touching way. Her emotionally intense scenes - from Cassie's famous breakdowns to her fragile vulnerability – are among the highlights of the series.
The White Lotus: social satire at the highest level
In the first season of HBO's hit series "The White Lotus", Sweeney showed a completely different side of her acting range. As Olivia Mossbacher, the cynical and intellectual daughter of a wealthy family, she portrayed a young woman who oscillates between moral arrogance and emotional insecurity. Her quiet but penetrating performance blended seamlessly into the biting satire and cemented her reputation for excelling even in complex supporting roles.
The Handmaid's Tale: Early recognition in the drama field
Even before she achieved worldwide fame, Sweeney made a name for herself in the dystopian hit series "The Handmaid's Tale". As Eden Spencer, she played a devout young woman brought up in the oppressive system of Gilead. Although her role was manageable, her sensitive portrayal left a lasting impression – early proof that she can embody tragic characters with great empathy.
Immaculate: horror, production talent and artistic control
With the horror film "Immaculate", Sweeney proved her courage not only as an actress but also as a producer. The film, in which she plays a young nun who discovers disturbing secrets in a secluded convent, shows her versatility and her willingness to take risks even in intense genre productions. As a producer, Sweeney had additional creative influence, which underlines her ambitions behind the camera.

Reality: Intense chamber drama with political explosiveness
The film "Reality", which is based on real events and authentic FBI interrogation transcripts, is one of Sweeney's most challenging projects. As "Reality Winner", a young whistleblower, she embodied a character under enormous pressure. Her subtle, controlled performance won over critics and showed that she can also shine in the minimalist chamber play format – without gimmickry, solely through facial expressions, body language and precise timing.
Anyone But You: Romantic comedy with star power
With the romantic comedy "Anyone But You", Sweeney made the step into the light, charming genre in 2023. Alongside Glen Powell, she played a young woman who reluctantly embarks on a "fake love vacation" – which naturally leads to unplanned feelings. The film was a surprise success and benefited greatly from the natural interplay between the lead actors. Sweeney showed here that she is not only a master of intense drama, but also of humor, lightness and classic rom-com charisma.

Madame Web: entry into the superhero genre
As part of the Sony Marvel universe, Sweeney took on a role in the movie "Madame Web". Although the production received overwhelmingly negative reviews, Sweeney's performance was positively praised. She proved that she can hold her own in effects-laden franchise productions and is open to adding action and fantasy-oriented projects to her repertoire.

Sharp Objects: Another remarkable supporting role
An often overlooked but important project in her filmography is the HBO mini-series "Sharp Objects" with Amy Adams. Here, Sweeney played an abused girl in a psychiatric ward – a small but extremely powerful role that shows her ability to deliver great emotional impact even in short scenes. For many industry insiders, this role was an early indication of her potential.
Under the Silver Lake: indie cinema with a mystery flair
Sweeney also took on a supporting role in David Robert Mitchell's surreal mystery film "Under the Silver Lake". The film, which moves between neo-noir, thriller and pop-cultural satire, gave her the opportunity to gain artistic experience in the independent film sector – an area that Sweeney has not lost sight of today.
Outlook: A star with a future
With an impressive list of projects – from highly acclaimed series to psychological dramas and blockbuster productions – Sydney Sweeney already has a career that many actresses take decades to achieve. Her mix of ambition, versatility and creative control shows that she is strategically and boldly shaping her career. Whether in emotional dramas, biting satires, horror films or major movie projects: Sweeney has proven she's up to any challenge. And there is every indication that the most exciting chapters of her career are yet to come.
