New Star Wars Trilogy Commissioned by Lucasfilm!

It could be a separate story with new characters

"Star Wars" fans are likely to have plenty to look forward to over the next few years. In addition to a number of new movie projects, including "The Mandalorian & Grogu" and "Lando", a new Star Wars trilogy has now been commissioned by Lucasfilm!

According to an insider from the trade magazine Deadline, it is said to be Episodes 10-12, in other words a continuation of the Skywalker saga. This would be quite realistic, as there is still a Star Wars film in development in which Rey tries to establish a new Jedi Order. At the same time, however, there are also insider reports that the trilogy will exist independently of the Skywalker saga.

Either way, Lucasfilm has brought in Simon Kinberg to develop the new movies. Kinberg is no stranger to the world of Disney: In addition to "Star Wars Rebels", he was heavily involved in the "X-Men" films and had a significant role in "Logan". He was also involved as an executive producer on "Deadpool & Wolverine". It is not yet known when the new trilogy will be released in cinemas.

This new trilogy will be part of a whole bunch of "Star Wars" movies that Disney currently has in the making. A film by Taika Waititi, a prequel about the first Jedi by James Mangold and a trilogy by Rian Johnson are to be released as well.

The Star Wars Sequels: A Look Back at Episodes 7 to 9

The continuation of the Star Wars saga with Episodes 7 to 9 brought the story of the Skywalker family back to the big screen after more than three decades and raised high expectations among fans around the world. The sequel trilogy, consisting of "The Force Awakens" (2015), "The Last Jedi" (2017) and "The Rise of Skywalker" (2019), picked up where George Lucas' original trilogy left off, bringing a mix of new and old characters that drew both admiration and criticism.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The release of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", directed by J.J. Abrams, marked a hugely successful start to the new trilogy in 2015. The film introduced a whole host of new characters, including Rey, a young scrap collector with a mysterious past, Finn, a renegade stormtrooper, and pilot Poe Dameron. When dark force user Kylo Ren, the grandson of Darth Vader and son of Princess Leia and Han Solo, enters the picture, it quickly becomes clear that the Skywalker legacy is central to the story. Kylo Ren, once Ben Solo, struggles with his inner conflict between light and darkness and becomes the tragic figure of the trilogy.

"The Force Awakens" was praised for its nostalgia and return to the classic themes of "Star Wars". However, some fans criticized the similarities to the original "Episode IV", as the story took up some familiar elements of the classic trilogy. The movie set box office records and revitalized the franchise by bringing back old stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford while introducing a new generation of heroes and villains.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

"The Last Jedi", directed by Rian Johnson, represented a significant twist in the tale and divided the fanbase like few other "Star Wars" films before it. While some fans celebrated the deeper character development and expansion of the Star Wars mythology, others were disappointed with the unconventional choices the movie made. The plot leads Rey to Luke Skywalker, who finds himself in isolation on a remote planet. The complex relationship between Rey and Luke takes center stage, as does the growing power of Kylo Ren, who continues to be torn between good and evil.

One of the most controversial scenes shows Luke Skywalker's radical behavior as he hesitates to train Rey in the Force and expresses his skepticism about the Jedi philosophy. This unconventional portrayal of an ageing hero divided viewers' opinions. However, Johnson's approach of leaving some long-held questions unanswered and challenging the notion of heroism gave the movie a new, more profound perspective. Despite the controversial reactions, "The Last Jedi" was instrumental in expanding and challenging the Star Wars universe.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

The final episode of the new trilogy, "The Rise of Skywalker", saw J.J. Abrams return to the director's chair. This episode attempted to answer many of the questions from the first two movies and bring the story of Rey, Kylo Ren and the Skywalker dynasty to a conclusion. "The Rise of Skywalker" reveals that Rey is the granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine, who is surprisingly revealed as the real antagonist behind everything. This decision led to mixed reactions, as many fans saw Palpatine's return as too abrupt and a departure from the previous films.

Rey and Kylo Ren, who finally embraces his light side in this episode and sacrifices himself to save Rey, are at the center of the film's dramatic twists and turns. The movie offers numerous spectacular moments and serves the audience with classic Star Wars elements. However, many critics complained that the story seemed rushed in places and that some central plot elements, such as Rey's origin and Palpatine's return, were given too little room for a deeper exploration.
