"Sonic" fans, pay attention: The iconic blue hedgehog is racing onto the big screen for the fourth time! Following the massive success of "Sonic the Hedgehog 3", the next sequel is on the way. Millions of fans worldwide are eagerly awaiting the next chapter. But what can we expect in the new movie? Which characters are returning? And when will Sonic's new adventure be released? Here's all the information and theories!

New Characters in Sonic 4: Amy Rose and Metal Sonic

The appearances of Metal Sonic and Amy Rose, two iconic figures from the Sonic universe, are particularly highly anticipated. The two characters were already teased in the mid-credit scene of "Sonic 3" and generated excitement among fans.

Amy Rose: Sonic's Biggest Fan

Amy Rose is a cheerful, energetic hedgehog girl who has been a staple of the games for years – and will soon be part of the movie series as well. Fans have been waiting a long time for her to appear, and now the moment has finally arrived.

Amy is known for her unwavering love for Sonic, even though those feelings aren't greally reciprocated. Nevertheless, she confidently refers to herself as his steady girlfriend. But she's far more than just a loving sidekick: With her legendary Piko Piko Hammer, she can easily take on powerful opponents. The hammer grows to an impressive size when needed, making Amy a serious fighter.

Kristen Bell will lend her voice to Amy Rose. Bell is experienced in voice acting – among other roles, she voiced Anna in Disney's animated hit "Frozen". Her casting suggests that Amy will play a significant role in the new movie.

Metal Sonic: Sonic's Most Dangerous Nemesis

Metal Sonic poses a genuine threat. This highly advanced robot was originally created by Dr. Eggman to artificially replicate Sonic's abilities – with one clear goal: to surpass him and ultimately destroy him. In the games, Metal Sonic is considered one of the blue hedgehog's most dangerous adversaries. His speed, precision, and lack of emotion make him a merciless opponent. What's particularly exciting is that at the end of "Sonic 3", not just a single Metal Sonic appears, but an entire army: the so-called Metal Sonic Troopers.

The Metal Sonic Troopers: An Army of Data

The Troopers originated in the comics. There, they were created from the data of the original Metal Sonic – not by Eggman himself, but by, Sonic's uncle Dr. Charles "Chuck" Hedgehog, among others. Originally, they were meant to serve as protectors, but were misused instead.

For the fourth film, the question now arises: Who controls this army? Who is behind the order to eliminate Sonic? Since Eggman seemingly met his end in the last film, the story needs a new antagonist – or at least a new power behind the scenes.

It's conceivable that the film will first explore the origin story of the Troopers before the big showdown. This approach would help the audience to better understand the motivation and threat posed by the new adversaries.

Ben Kingsley in an unknown role

According to the latest rumors, cult actor Ben Kingsley is now also set to appear in a previously unknown role in "Sonic 4". As it is often the case, big names like him are rarely cast in small supporting roles. Insider Jeff Sneider even refers to a "key role".

The question is: Which character will Kingsley portray? Will he be voicing a CGI character, or will he appear as a human character? As soon as we know more, you'll find out in the KinoCheck app. That way, you'll always have all the "Sonic 4" news at your fingertips and won't miss the first trailer!

Will shadow return?

Another exciting possibility is the potential return of Shadow the Hedgehog. Sonic's dark rival apparently survived the events of the third movie – at least that's what the post-credits scene seemed to imply. Shadow is a complex character who oscillates between good and evil. In "Sonic 2", Knuckles already went from adversary to teammate – perhaps the team of heroes will now grow even further. A collaboration between Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, Amy, and possibly Shadow would open up a new dynamic and set the franchise up for a larger ensemble adventure.

Will Dr. Eggman make a comeback?

Many fans are wondering whether Jim Carrey will once again step into his signature role as Dr. Eggman. His comeback in "Sonic 3" was already a surprise, as Carrey had previously announced his retirement from acting. Although Eggman seemingly met his end in the last film, in the movie business, dead doesn't always mean dead. Flashbacks, digital copies of his consciousness, or a surprising plot twist could make a return possible. However, whether Carrey is ready to do it again, remains uncertain.

Possible New Characters

The Sonic universe is full of other characters who deserve to join the movie franchise. Here are two of our favorites!

Rotor Walrus

Rotor Walrus is tech-savvy and a loyal friend to our heroes. As a humanoid walrus, he brings not only brute strength but, above all, technical expertise to the team. If the origin of the Metal Sonic Troopers plays a role in Part 4, Rotor could be incorporated as an expert in robotics. His design would certainly look spectacular in a live-action adaptation.

Rouge the Bat

Rouge the Bat is a confident treasure hunter who often works as a spy for the G.U.N. organization and has close ties to Shadow. Her flirtatious nature and her own agenda regularly cause tension – especially with Knuckles. And should Shadow return, Rouge would be the perfect addition to further expand his backstory.

Inspiration for the Story: Sonic CD

Rumors suggest that Sonic's new adventure may not be titled "Sonic the Hedgehog 4", but rather that the title will be inspired by the cult classic "Sonic CD." In this game, Sonic travels to Little Planet, which appears once a year above Lake Never Lake. Time travel plays a central role there: past, present, and future exist in parallel. Dr. Eggman attempts to manipulate time with the help of the so-called Time Stones.

If the film does indeed adopt this concept, we could be in for a bleak vision of the future – perhaps a world in which Metal Sonic has gained the upper hand. Time-travel elements would open up new visual possibilities and take the franchise to a new narrative level. In this game, Amy is kidnapped by Metal Sonic – but in the film, she is likely to play a much more active role. Portraying her as an independent fighter would resonate more with modern audiences than the classic "damsel in distress" role.

The creative team behind the camera

The previous films were directed by Jeff Fowler, who will once again return for "Sonic 4". His knack for striking the right balance between humor, action, and fan service was a key factor in the series' success. The screenwriting team is also likely to remain largely the same. Paramount seems to be sticking to its tried-and-true formula for success – a smart move given the impressive numbers: To date, the franchise has grossed over $1.2 billion worldwide, with "Sonic 3" alone bringing in nearly $500 million.

The Future of the Sonic Universe

It is unclear whether "Sonic 4" will be the final chapter in the main series. Given ist financial success, however, an end seems unlikely. Instead, the franchise could focus more heavily on spin-offs. There is already a "Knuckles" series on Paramount+. And according to industry reports, Paramount Pictures is planning another secret spin-off under the working title "Sonic Universe Event Film", which is set to be released on December 22, 2028. Fans are speculating about a solo adventure for Shadow or even a film centered on the Chaotix crew. Amy or Metal Sonic could also get their own projects in the future.

A fast-paced chapter lies ahead

With "Sonic the Hedgehog 4", the franchise is heading toward a new, potentially even bigger adventure. The introduction of Amy Rose and Metal Sonic, the possible return of Shadow, and rumors of time travel promise an exciting development of the story. Whether as a direct sequel or a reimagining of "Sonic CD": The fourth film has the potential to take the series to a new level, both narratively and visually.

One thing is certain: The world's fastest hedgehog is far from reaching his destination – and we can look forward to seeing where the journey takes us next. "Sonic the Hedgehog 4" hits theaters on March 19, 2027.
