Pirates of the Caribbean 6: Filming is to Start Next Year
The spin-off with Margot Robbie is still in development as well
Hoist the sails! Seven years after "Dead Men Tell No Tales", the next chapter in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series is finally in production. Now things are getting concrete, as filming on "Pirates of the Caribbean 6" is set to begin next year.
According to World of Reel, the movie will start shooting at the end of 2025. Instead of a direct sequel to the previous movies, "Pirates of the Caribbean 6" will be a soft reboot, based on current plans. This means we will see a number of new main characters who will continue the franchise.
Nevertheless, there might be some guest appearances: Orlando Bloom, for example, who played Will Turner in the first movies, has already expressed interest in making a return. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has likewise emphasized on several occasions that he would like Johnny Depp to make a comeback as Captain Jack Sparrow. Most recently, there were rumors that Disney apparently wanted to bring Johnny Depp back for a supporting role in "Pirates of the Caribbean 6". Whether this will actually happen remains to be seen.
However, there does seem to be a consensus on the script: It is still to be written by "The Last of Us" creator Craig Mazin in collaboration with Ted Elliot. So if production progresses quickly, a release in late 2026 or summer 2027 would be possible.
Besides "Pirates of the Caribbean 6", the spin-off with Margot Robbie, which is being written by "Birds of Prey" author Christina Hodson, is still in development. The story will focus on a group of female pirates who experience adventures together. However, there is no release date yet.
All Pirates of the Caribbean films at a glance
The "Pirates of the Caribbean" film series, which began in 2003 with "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl", quickly became a worldwide phenomenon. The five films in the series grossed over 4.5 billion US dollars and turned Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp, into a cult figure.
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
The first film in the series, "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl", directed by Gore Verbinski, brought the pirate genre back to the big screen in Hollywood in 2003. The story revolves around the young blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) , who teams up with the eccentric pirate Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) to rescue the kidnapped governor's daughter Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) from the hands of the cursed pirate captain Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush).
The film surprised audiences and critics alike with its successful mix of adventure, humor and fantastic elements. Johnny Depp received much praise for his portrayal of Jack Sparrow and was even nominated for an Oscar. The mixture of a supernatural pirate curse and the humorous but exciting plot made the film an instant classic.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)
After the enormous success of the first part, the sequel "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" was released in 2006, once again directed by Gore Verbinski. In this movie, Jack Sparrow is confronted with a dangerous opponent: Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) , the undead captain of the Flying Dutchman, to whom Jack has owed his soul. At the same time, Will Turner fights to save Elizabeth and preserve their love.
The second film built on the success of the first and deepened the universe. The characters became more complex, and the introduction of Davy Jones and his crew of undead sailors created a dark, compelling effect. The movie ended with a cliffhanger, setting the stage for the third installment.
Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World's End (2007)
Just one year later, "Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World's End" was released in cinemas. The plot begins directly after the events of the second part. Jack Sparrow is trapped in the realm of the dead, and his friends Will, Elizabeth and the resurrected Barbossa set out to rescue him. Together they must face the East India Trading Company, which, under the leadership of Lord Cutler Beckett, wants to wipe out piracy once and for all.
At World's End was full of epic battles, intrigue and emotional moments. The movie offered a conclusion to the original trilogy by bringing together numerous storylines and developing the characters further. The epic final battle in the Maelstrom is particularly memorable, with all the conflicts coming to a head.
Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides (2011)
After the conclusion of the trilogy, a new chapter in the series began in 2011 with "Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides". With Rob Marshall as the new director and a reduced cast, the plot now focused exclusively on Jack Sparrow. In this film, he meets Angelica (Penélope Cruz), a former flame, and sets off in search of the Fountain of Youth. In the process, they come into conflict with the notorious pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), who is also in search of immortality.
Although Stranger Tides was less well received by fans than the original trilogy, the film was still a box office hit. The focus on Jack Sparrow's quirky personality and the introduction of new characters gave the series a breath of fresh air, even if many missed the cinematic depth of the first three parts.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017)
"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales", the fifth installment in the series, was released in 2017 and directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg. In this film, Jack Sparrow is haunted by an old enemy: Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), a ghost pirate who seeks revenge on Jack. To stop Salazar, Jack and his new allies, including Henry Turner (Brenton Thwaites), Will's son, and astronomer Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario), must find the legendary Trident of Poseidon.
The movie once again concluded several storylines, particularly for the characters Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, who returned briefly. Despite mixed reviews, the film was commercially successful and left the end of the series open, leaving room for possible sequels.
The Pirates of the Caribbean films have evolved from a one-off production into one of the most popular franchises of recent decades. From iconic characters, thrilling adventures and impressive special effects to a touch of magic and humor, the series offers everything fans could want from a pirate adventure.
