Kaiju fans listen up: Kaitlyn Dever is officially joining Warner's "MonsterVerse". According to Empire, she is set to take on a role in the highly anticipated sequel to "Godzilla x Kong".

Dever is one of the most sought-after actresses of her generation and will be seen this year as Abby in the second season of "The Last of Us".

The next "Godzilla x Kong" movie will be directed by Grant Sputore, who previously directed the science fiction movie "I Am Mother" with Hilary Swank. He thus follows in the footsteps of Adam Wingard, who surprisingly revealed in May of last year that he would not be available for a third "MonsterVerse" movie. Despite Wingard's earlier ideas for another epic Kaiju battle, the script will be written by "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" author Dave Callaham.

Prior to his departure, Adam Wingard had already teased that Destoroyah may feature in the new "Godzilla x Kong" sequel. There was also speculation that Minilla - otherwise known as Baby Godzilla - would make an appearance. The new clash of the cinematic giants is expected to hit the big screen on March 26, 2027.

The MonsterVerse From Warner Bros.: An Epic Journey Through Gigantic Battles

The MonsterVerse from Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures has developed into one of the most exciting film franchises in modern blockbuster culture in recent years. With iconic monsters such as Godzilla and King Kong, the movie universe has thrilled millions of viewers. Time for a little look back at the films to date.

1. Godzilla (2014) - The New Beginning of a Titan

The modern MonsterVerse began with "Godzilla" (2014). Director Gareth Edwards brought the legendary Kaijū back to its Japanese roots after its American debacle in 1998. The movie reveals the existence of Godzilla and other ancient creatures that lived on Earth long before humans. Godzilla himself is portrayed as a force of nature who is supposed to restore the balance between the monsters. The film refrained from excessive monster fights and focused more on suspense and a realistic setting, which impressed both critics and fans.

2. Kong: Skull Island (2017) - The King of the Island

Three years after "Godzilla", "Kong: Skull Island" (2017) brought the famous giant ape King Kong to the MonsterVerse. Set in the 1970s, the movie tells the story of a group of scientists and soldiers exploring a mysterious island. There they meet Kong, who protects the island from dangerous creatures, the Skullcrawlers. Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts focused on a colorful aesthetic and thrilling action sequences. In addition, the MONARCH organization was further established, which serves as the central theme of the MonsterVerse. Starring Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson, the movie was met with positive reviews and paved the way for further crossover films.

3. Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) - The Battle of the Titans

In "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" (2019), the MonsterVerse was expanded to include numerous iconic Kaijū. In addition to Godzilla, classic monsters such as King Ghidorah, Mothra and Rodan also made a return. The film features an epic battle between Godzilla and Ghidorah, the three-headed alien dragon who wants to subdue the Earth. Director Michael Dougherty provided spectacular monster battles and epic direction, but was criticized for the weak plot. Nevertheless, the movie was celebrated by fans for its loyalty to the Godzilla mythology.

4. Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) - The Ultimate Duel

The long-awaited clash of the titans took place in "Godzilla vs. Kong" (2021). The movie brought the two most famous monsters in film history together in an epic battle. While Godzilla attacks cities seemingly for inexplicable reasons, Kong is taken out of his hideout on Skull Island to find a new home. The story takes the audience into the "Hollow Earth", a world underground where gigantic creatures live. Director Adam Wingard focused on fast-paced action, impressive visual effects and a spectacular finale that not only put Godzilla and Kong in the spotlight, but also Mechagodzilla. Despite mixed reviews, the film became a financial success and proved the enduring popularity of the MonsterVerse.
