George Hardy, a shepherd who loves his sheep and only raises them for their wool. Every evening he reads a detective story and pretends that his sheep can understand him, unaware that not only can they understand him, but that they argue for hours afterwards about who the culprit is. When George is found dead in mysterious circumstances, the sheep immediately realize that it is a murder and think they know everything they need to know to solve the case. Local policeman Tim Derry, on the other hand, has never solved a serious crime in his life. So the sheep come to the conclusion that they have to solve the case themselves, even if it means leaving their pasture for the first time and facing the fact that the human world is not as simple as it appears in books.
