Scooby-Doo is returning – in a live-action series on Netflix! The streaming giant has now officially announced this. In regards to its plot, Netflix plans on telling an origin story: It will be about how Scooby-Doo and his friends gather for the first time to solve a case together. The friends Shaggy and Daphne meet Velma and Fred at a summer camp. They become involved in a mystery surrounding a puppy who has witnessed a possible supernatural murder.

The series will comprise eight episodes. Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg will be working as showrunners. The duo has already realized several projects together, most recently the Amazon spy action series "Citadel". The live-action adaptation will be produced by Greg Berlanti, who played a key role in the development of the big Arrowverse. Nothing is known about the cast of the series yet.

The Scooby-Doo franchise kicked off in 1969 with the animated series "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!". Various adaptations followed, such as the two live-action movies in the early 2000s, starring for example Matthew Lillard and "Buffy" star Sarah Michelle Gellar. The most recent animated film to be released in cinemas was "Scoob!" in 2020.

Movie and Series Tips for Scooby-Doo Fans

Since its first broadcast in 1969, the "Scooby-Doo" franchise has delighted numerous generations of fans. The adventures of the lovable but anxious dog Scooby-Doo and his friends, who travel from one case to the next in a mystery mobile, are among the most popular and enduring in the history of the animation world. Here we would like to introduce you to some movies and series that convey a similar spooky adventure feeling and appeal to fans of mystery, humor and supernatural puzzles.

Gravity Falls

"Gravity Falls" is an animated series that is reminiscent of "Scooby-Doo" in many ways, especially in its mix of supernatural mysteries and humorous moments. The series follows twins Dipper and Mabel Pines, who spend the summer with their great-uncle Stan in the mysterious town of Gravity Falls. Like "Scooby-Doo", they encounter all sorts of supernatural creatures and have to solve puzzles while discovering the town's secrets. With a similar mix of adventure, humor and a little bit of horror, "Gravity Falls" is a great recommendation for "Scooby-Doo" fans.

The Addams Family

"The Addams Family" is a family as quirky as the Mystery Inc. group. The movies from the 90s, as well as the more recent CGI animated film from 2019, offer a mix of comedic and scary elements. Fans of "Scooby-Doo" who like a group of unconventional characters who throw themselves into unusual situations might enjoy the movies about the Addams family. The dark but humorous atmosphere is reminiscent of many "Scooby-Doo" adventures.

Wednesday

When talking about the Addams Family, it's hard to ignore the Netflix hit "Wednesday". The series revolves around Wednesday Addams, the legendary daughter of the Addams Family, who attends Nevermore Academy - an elite school for exceptional teenagers - as an adolescent. The series follows Wednesday as she not only struggles with her own supernatural abilities, but also tries to solve a mysterious crime that threatens the school.

In the starring role, Jenna Ortega as Wednesday impresses with a dark but humorous performance. The series combines mystery, horror and black humor elements and attracts fans of the Addams Family as well as fans of secrets and supernatural mysteries. There is one season so far, but a second one is of course already in the pipeline.

Supernatural

For the adult "Scooby-Doo" fans who like a more serious approach to supernatural cases, "Supernatural" is an excellent choice. The series revolves around brothers Sam and Dean Winchester, who travel across America as hunters of supernatural beings to battle demons, ghosts and other dark creatures. Although the series is darker and more suspenseful than "Scooby-Doo", it offers similar themes of uncovering secrets and fighting the supernatural.

A bonus for "Scooby-Doo" fans is the "Supernatural" episode "Scoobynatural" (2018), in which the Winchester brothers are drawn into an animated version of "Scooby-Doo" and experience an adventure together with Scooby and the other Mystery Inc. members.
