Finally, our favorite ogre is coming back! By the time "Shrek 5" hits theaters, an incredible 17 years will have passed since the last movie "Shrek Forever After". So expectations for the comeback are sky high. Since the big announcement, quite a lot has happened: besides a major release delay, a new teaser trailer has provided further hints about the story – but also sparked a big debate over the character designs. High time for a full update!

Release Chaos: Shrek Flees the Christmas Blockbusters

Let's start with the bad news right away: Universal Pictures has significantly altered its plans for the release. Originally scheduled for summer 2026, the fifth installment was then pushed back to December and has now been postponed once again. This is mainly for strategic reasons: December 2026 is already absolutely packed at the box office. With blockbusters like "Avengers: Doomsday" and "Dune: Part Three", two massive franchises are competing in the same release window. DreamWorks and Universal are therefore hoping for greater success in the summer: the new official theatrical release date for "Shrek 5" is June 30, 2027.

Time Jump and Star Power: Zendaya Heads to the Swamp

From the very beginning, it was clear: the original voice actors Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy are returning to their iconic roles as Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey.

But what about the ogre offspring, who were still in diapers in the previous movies? As the first teaser trailers show, "Shrek 5" will feature a significant time jump. In the movie, we will no longer see baby ogres, but rebellious teenagers! What's interesting is that the first teaser focused primarily on Shrek's and Fiona's daughter, who is voiced by Zendaya. In the new trailer, however, she appears to be on her own, while the rest of the family embarks on a new adventure – perhaps to rescue her from some trouble?

Controversy Over the Shrek 5 Teaser Trailer

Speaking of trailers: the teasers have sparked heated discussions online. The reason: the characters' looks. Numerous comparisons have been drawn between the older films and "Shrek 5", with people analyzing even the smallest details of Shrek's face. Not to mention that the characters are, of course, supposed to be a bit older than they were 16 years ago.

Directing Powerhouse: The Return of a Master

In order to maintain the humor, the satirical jabs at pop culture, and the emotional story – despite the many changes – DreamWorks has once again strengthened its creative team. Originally, "Trolls" director Walt Dohrn was set to direct the film on his own. However, Conrad Vernon has since joined the project as co-director. This is a very promising sign for hardcore fans: Vernon previously served as co-director on "Shrek 2" – the installment that many still consider the undisputed highlight of the entire franchise. This has quickly raised hopes for a return to the series' former narrative strength, where both children and adults alike find plenty to enjoy thanks to clever jokes.

The Shrek Universe Keeps Growing: Donkey's Big Moment

Besides the main movie, there's even more to look forward to from this crazy fairytale universe. Eddie Murphy has already officially confirmed it: we're getting a standalone Donkey spin-off! And honestly: after Puss in Boots got his own solo adventures, we think it's long overdue! But one thing at a time: we're incredibly excited about "Shrek 5" and can't wait to see whether the wonderfully sarcastic fairytale humor will still work in 2027.
