Time for a good beating! Three years ago, Warner Brothers presented us with a new "Mortal Kombat" live-action film. Now, with "Mortal Kombat 2", the eagerly awaited sequel will finally follow in 2025. So welcome to our "Mortal Kombat 2" movie preview!

This is What "Mortal Kombat 2" Is All About

In "Mortal Kombat 2", a decisive battle between Earth and Outworld awaits us. Part 1 ended with Shang Tsung having to admit defeat in the battle against Cole Young and his allies. But he swore revenge: he wanted to return with a whole army! So another battle seems unavoidable and Cole Young sets out in search of new champions. One name is at the top of his list: In Los Angeles, he wants to win over the legendary Hollywood star Johnny Cage for his team.

Will We Finally Get to the Title-Giving Tournament?

The reboot of "Mortal Kombat" was reasonably well received by fans, but there was still some criticism: the tournament that gave the game its title didn't really happen. That could change in part 2: In an interview with Deadline, Greg Russo, co-writer of the first film, revealed that he sees the reboot as a trilogy. The first movie takes place before the tournament, the second movie during it and "Mortal Kombat 3" afterwards.

The Cast

Actor Lewis Tan, known from "Shadow and Bone" and "Deadpool 2", was already able to make an impression in part 1 in the role of Cole Young and will therefore also return in "Mortal Kombat 2". Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade and Josh Lawson as Kano are back as well. Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion and "The Raid" star Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero have likewise been confirmed for "Mortal Kombat 2".

In January 2024, producer Todd Garner posted a photo on X featuring the famous belt buckle of cult character Johnny Cage. Much to the delight of fans: the Hollywood star is one of the most frequently recurring characters in the entire franchise. At first glance, he is characterized by having a big mouth and his self-absorbed and materialistic nature. Over the course of the games, however, he develops into one of the most valuable fighters on Earth and is regarded as a faithful and loyal companion. Johnny Cage is embodied by none other than "The Boys" star Karl Urban.

Moreover, we can look forward to a few more new characters: according to The Hollywood Reporter, Tati Gabrielle will take on the role of Jade, Princess Kitana's bodyguard. She in turn will be played by Adeline Rudolph. Martyn Ford slips into the role of the powerful conqueror Shao Kahn. Desmond Chiam will play King Jerrod, Ana Thu Nguyen will be seen as Queen Sindel and Damon Herriman as Quan Chi. The nomadic mutant Baraka will be portrayed by C.J. Bloomfield.

The Crew

Simon McQuoid, who made his directorial debut with "Mortal Kombat", will once again direct the film. The screenwriter is Jeremy Slater, who previously worked on the Disney series "Moon Knight" with Oscar Isaac and also collaborated on Netflix's quirky superhero series "The Umbrella Academy". In addition to him, Ed Boon, the creator of the video games, is also involved in the screenplay again. Among others, the movie is being produced by James Wan and Michael Clear with their production company Atomic Monster.

The Future of Mortal Kombat

Should "Mortal Kombat 2" prove to be a success, fans may be in for a bright future. In a podcast for Variety magazine, Sub-Zero actor Joe Taslim spoke about having signed on for a total of four more "Mortal Kombat" movies. This does not necessarily mean that the four sequels will actually be made. Nevertheless, Warner seems to have big plans for the series.

Filming for "Mortal Kombat 2" has already been completed on the Australian Gold Coast. Apparently, though, they are taking their time to ensure a good post-production: the planned theatrical release of "Mortal Kombat 2" is October 24, 2025.
