Rumor: Sydney Sweeney in Spider-Man 4
Shooting is scheduled to start next summer
At last! Tom Holland confirmed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that "Spider-Man 4" is officially in production and that he will of course be slipping into the costume of the friendly spider once again. Rumors are also increasing that Sydney Sweeney might take on a role in the blockbuster as well.
Sweeney is regarded as one of the most sought-after actresses in Hollywood and made her big breakthrough with the HBO series "Euphoria". She has also gained some experience in the superhero genre: In February, she was seen as Julia Cornwall aka Spider-Woman in "Madame Web". However, the movie did not do well and turned out to be a huge flop.
The Hollywood scooper MyTimeToShineHello claims to have learned that Sweeney could play the second female lead in "Spider-Man 4". We are not talking about Spider-Woman, however, but Black Cat. She first appeared in 1979 in "The Amazing Spider-Man" issue 194. She is not a classic supervillain, but a cat burglar and thief. Her interest in Spider-Man led to her temporarily joining the side of the heroes. Originally she had no superpowers, but later acquired them through an experiment by Kingpin. This gave her the ability to spread "bad luck". This harmed her opponents, but had negative effects on her allies, too.
"Spider-Man: King in Black" - the currently leaked title - will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the director of "Shang-Chi". Little is known about the plot so far; apparently the script is still in its early stages of development. Should the title indeed prove to be true, however, supervillain Knull will certainly play an important role. But one thing is certain: Zendaya will be back alongside Tom Holland. The movie is scheduled to be released in July 2026.
The Career of Sydney Sweeney
Sydney Sweeney, one of Hollywood's up-and-coming actresses, has established herself as a true all-rounder in recent years. With her talent for bringing emotional depth and versatility to her roles, she has risen to become one of the entertainment industry's top names. While her career began at a young age, it was a few key projects that led her to international stardom.
Early Career and Breakthrough
Sydney Sweeney was born on September 12, 1997, in Spokane, Washington, and knew from an early age that she wanted to pursue an acting career. She convinced her parents to let her audition by presenting a five-year career plan, which emphasized her commitment and ambition from the start. Sweeney appeared in a number of minor roles before she had her breakthrough.
Her first major success came with a regular role in the series "The Handmaid's Tale" (2018), where she appeared in the second season as Eden Blaine. The dark dystopian series based on Margaret Atwood's novel garnered worldwide attention, and Sweeney impressed audiences with her performance of the young, naive woman who is drawn into the brutal world of Gilead. Her portrayal of a character defined by innocence and obedience made her stand out as a talented actress capable of portraying complex emotions.
Euphoria - The Big Breakthrough
However, the real turning point in Sweeney's career came with her role in the HBO hit series "Euphoria" (2019). The series, which depicts the lives of teenagers today in a poignant and often unsparing way, provided Sweeney with the perfect stage to further develop her talent. In "Euphoria", she plays Cassie Howard, a high school girl struggling with insecurities, relationship drama and the pressures of sexuality and growing up. Her portrayal of the inner conflicts and insecurities Cassie struggles with has been praised by critics and garnered her much attention.
In this role, Sweeney manages to impressively embody Cassie's fragility, but also her desperate search for recognition and love. "Euphoria" was celebrated not only for its artistry, but also for the authentic performances of the actors, with Sweeney considered one of the most outstanding performers in the series.
The White Lotus - Critical Acclaim and Recognition
Another project that further cemented Sweeney's status in Hollywood was the HBO miniseries "The White Lotus" (2021). In this satirical dramedy series, which follows the lives of privileged guests and staff at a luxury resort, she played Olivia Mossbacher, the cynical, wealthy daughter of a rich family. Sweeney showed another side of her talent in the role, portraying the arrogant yet sharp-tongued and relentless Olivia.
"The White Lotus" was a critical and commercial success, earning Sweeney further acclaim. The series explored themes of power, class and privilege, and Sweeney was a master at showing her character's complex and often contradictory emotions. Her performance in "The White Lotus" confirmed that she is far more than just a teenage star - she is an actress with great versatility who knows how to take on difficult and provocative roles.
Further Outstanding Projects
In addition to these major TV roles, Sydney Sweeney has also appeared in various movies. One notable film was "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" (2019) by Quentin Tarantino, in which she made a small but memorable appearance. Although she only played a supporting role, her participation in such a prestigious project was another step on her way to the Hollywood star ranks.
In 2021, she also played a significant role in the Amazon Prime thriller "The Voyeurs". In this psychological thriller, she played the lead role of Pippa, a young woman who becomes entangled in the lives of her neighbors, leading to dark and dangerous consequences. This movie showed a completely different side of Sweeney and once again proved her versatility as an actress.
Reality and Anyone But You
One of her more recent and also highly acclaimed roles is in the film "Reality" (2023). In this biographical drama, Sweeney plays Reality Winner, a former NSA employee who leaked classified information about Russian hacking attacks on the US election to the press and was jailed for it. The movie is based on a real interrogation transcript, and Sweeney's portrayal of the title role is remarkable. Less serious, on the other hand, was the romantic comedy "Anyone But You", in which she was seen alongside Glen Powell.
Madame Web and Immaculate
In 2024, she was cast in Sony's "Madame Web", in which she played Spider-Woman. However, the movie turned out to be a flop and was dismissed by fans and critics alike. A little later, she dived into the horror genre with "Immaculate". Her intense portrayal of the nun Cecilia was met with a largely positive response from viewers.
