G.I. Joe is back! As confirmed by industry magazine Deadline, two new films from the cult action franchise are in the works.

Danny McBride, who starred alongside Seth Rogen in comedies such as "This Is the End" and "Pineapple Express", is responsible for one of the films. At the same time, screenwriter Max Landis – who was responsible for "American Ultra," among other films – is working on his own project in the "G.I. Joe" universe. According to The Hollywood Reporter, both scripts will then be merged into one. Deadline, on the other hand, reports that these are two separate projects.

G.I. Joe already made its way to the big screen with "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" and "G.I. Joe: Retaliation". Together, the two films grossed around $678.1 million worldwide and brought together prominent stars such as Bruce Willis, Dwayne Johnson, and Channing Tatum in front of the camera. This was followed in 2021 by the spin-off "Snake Eyes", which fell well short of expectations with box office takings of just $40 million.

The future of the franchise has a lot to offer anyway: in addition to the two live-action films, an animated series titled "Energon Universe" is also in production. The brutal series from "Invincible" creator Robert Kirkman combines legendary brands such as "Transformers", "G.I. Joe", and Kirkman's own sci-fi series "Void Rivals". According to official statements, the project is set to be an epic crossover that combines the different mythologies into a dark overall universe.

The best movie tips for fans of G.I. Joe: action, team spirit, and high-tech missions

Anyone who grew up with G.I. Joe or loves the movies will appreciate one thing above all else: spectacular action, sworn elite units, futuristic technology, and clearly defined heroes fighting global threats. The recipe for success, consisting of military precision, team dynamics, and comic-like exaggeration, can also be found in numerous other productions. Here are ten more detailed movie recommendations that fans of the G.I. Joe universe are sure to love.

The Expendables

Sylvester Stallone assembled an entire arsenal of genre icons in this action blockbuster. A group of mercenaries takes on dangerous missions around the globe – heavily armed, tactically skilled, and always on the brink of explosion. As with G.I. Joe, the team takes center stage: each character brings a special skill to the table, from close combat specialists to snipers. The film deliberately focuses on old-school action, grand gestures, and uncompromising firefights – just the thing for fans of military task forces.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol

The Mission Impossible series combines high-tech gadgets with covert operations on the international stage. In Ghost Protocol, the IMF team is officially disbanded after an attack on the Kremlin and must operate without backup. The parallels to G.I. Joe are obvious: a small, highly skilled team takes on a mission with global consequences. Breathtaking action sequences – most notably the spectacular climbing scene at the Burj Khalifa – provide thrills, while state-of-the-art technology is cleverly employed.

Transformers

Michael Bay's blockbuster combines military firepower with science fiction elements. Soldiers fight side by side with alien robots against a global threat. The military focus is particularly interesting for G.I. Joe fans: special forces, high-tech weapons, and global locations shape the action. The bombastic style and clear lines between good and evil are strongly reminiscent of the comic-like staging of the G.I. Joe universe.

The A-Team

Based on the cult series, the film tells the story of a wrongfully persecuted special forces unit that uses ingenuity and teamwork to extricate itself from dangerous situations. Humor, explosive action, and strong group dynamics are at the forefront. Similar to G.I. Joe, the film thrives on the different personalities within the unit – from strategists to daredevils – and on creative solutions in seemingly hopeless situations.

Kingsman: The Secret Service

Anyone who loves G.I. Joe's exaggerated villains, futuristic weapons, and secret organizations will be well served here. "Kingsman" combines British humor with stylized action and unusual gadgets. The agent organization operates in secret and protects the world from eccentric supervillains – a concept strongly reminiscent of the G.I. Joe vs. Cobra principle. The stylish staging and creative fight scenes make the film a modern take on the genre.

Edge of Tomorrow

In this science fiction action film, a soldier in futuristic armor fights against alien invaders – and experiences the same day over and over again. In addition to the time loop element, the film impresses with its military structure: training, team coordination, and strategic planning are the focus. The high-tech equipment and the interaction of the units are strongly reminiscent of the technology-oriented side of G.I. Joe.

Red

This action comedy revolves around retired secret agents who take up arms once again. The film combines humor with espionage elements and explosive confrontations. Fans of the charismatic characters from G.I. Joe in particular will enjoy the pointed dialogue and the ensemble's interplay.

Conclusion

Whether it's exaggerated comic action, futuristic military technology, or realistic mission scenarios, all of these films pick up on central elements that make G.I. Joe so popular: team spirit, special forces, global threats, and spectacular battles. Depending on personal taste, fans can choose between bombastic blockbuster cinema and intense military action. However, all recommendations have one thing in common: they deliver adrenaline, strong characters, and the feeling of being part of an elite unit fighting against chaos.
