Let's embark on a new adventure! The live-action adaptation of the famous anime and manga "One Piece" was a huge success for Netflix. It goes without saying that another season will therefore follow in 2025. In this article, we show you what you can look forward to in the new "One Piece" season!

The Plot of One Piece Season 2

The first season of "One Piece" centered on the East Blue saga, covering the first 53 episodes of the anime and the first 100 chapters of the manga. The second season focuses on the Alabasta saga, which comprises 117 chapters in the manga and 74 episodes in the anime. However, only part of this story is covered in season 2.

We'll now roughly describe the plot from the original - so beware of spoilers! If you'd rather just find out about the new characters and their actors, it's best to skip straight to the next section.

At the beginning of the second season, the Straw Hat Pirates finally reach the Grand Line after a short detour to Loguetown. Loguetown is the place where Gold Roger was executed. This is also where Luffy will meet Captain Smoker for the first time. On their journey, they discover some familiar places from the manga and anime, such as Reverse Mountain, Whisky Peak, Little Garden, the winter island of Drum and the desert kingdom of Alabasta.

During their first journey through the Grand Line, the young pirate crew encounters new enemies and allies in the original - two of whom later become part of the Straw Hat Pirates. The group is also drawn into the schemes of the Baroque Works, which is involved in a conspiracy surrounding the kingdom of Alabasta.

The kingdom is shaken by a serious political crisis. The Straw Hat Pirates meet Princess Vivi, who is trying to prevent a civil war in her homeland. Behind this chaos is Sir Crocodile, the leader of the Baroque Works and a member of the Seven Warlords of the Sea. He plans to seize power in Alabasta by turning the population against each other.

Continuation in One Piece Season 3

Alabasta is also where the climax of the saga takes place. However, we won't be seeing the main action until "One Piece" season 3, if there is one. This has not yet been confirmed by Netflix. But if the second season is as successful as the first one, nothing should stand in the way of another season. According to those responsible, the second season of the Netflix series ends with the end of the Drum Island arc.

The Cast of the New One Piece Characters

The cast of the main characters naturally remains the same: 21-year-old Mexican Iñaki Godoy once again plays the series hero Monkey D. Luffy. Emily Rudd is also back in her role as Nami, the Japanese Mackenyu as Zoro, Jacob Romero as Usopp and Taz Skylar as the ship's cook Sanji.

We will also see Luffy's brother Portgas D. Ace for the first time. However, there is no information yet as to who will play him. But rumors are already talking about the Mexican Xolo Mariduena.

Ship's Doctor Chopper and Others

Those familiar with the manga or anime already know: in the second season, the ship's doctor Chopper joins the Straw Hat Pirates. We are eagerly awaiting the final look of the cuddly reindeer in the live-action version.

In Chopper's life story, two people in particular play an important role: Dr. Hiriluk and Dr. Kureha. The former will be played by Mark Harelik. For Dr. Kureha, Jamie Lee Curtis was cast for a very long time. Due to scheduling difficulties, however, this role will now be played by another actress, namely Katey Sagal. The older among you will no doubt remember her in her iconic role as Peggy Bundy. In the 2000s, she primarily gained notoriety in her role as Gemma Teller Morrow in "Sons of Anarchy".

The Antagonists

Mr. Zero

The big adversary of the second season will most likely be Mr. 0, better known as Sir Crocodile. The leader of the Baroque Works has eaten the sand fruit: This allows him to control sand and even dissolve himself into sand. If he touches other creatures, he can drain them of water until they are completely emaciated. The villain is played by the American Joe Manganiello. Most of you probably know him from "Spider-Man", "Magic Mike" or most recently "The Kill Room".

Miss All Sunday

His number 2 is Miss All Sunday, alias Nico Robin. In her childhood, she experienced a trauma: her home island of Ohara was destroyed by the World Government because the scholars there were researching the forbidden "Lost History". Robin was the only survivor of this catastrophe and sought a new family after this experience. This led her to Sir Crocodile.

She has eaten the powers of the Hana Hana fruit. This enables her to sprout different body parts in different places. This allows her to hold opponents from a distance, bind them or even break bones without putting herself in danger. Nico Robin is played by the Russian actress Lera Abova.

Further Agents and Pirates

We will also see other representatives of the Baroque Works, including Mr. 3, Mr. 5, Mr. 9 and the special agent Miss Valentine. Mr. 3 is played by Hollywood actor and screenwriter David Dastmalchian. Mr. 5 is played by the hitherto rather unknown US American Camrus Johnson. Jazzara Jaslyn provides the face of his partner Miss Valentine and Mr. 9 is played by Daniel Lasker.

We will also see a new crew of pirates in the second season: the so-called Giant Warrior Pirates. Their captains Brogy and Dorry have been battling it out on Little Garden for over 100 years to see who is the bigger pirate. This is also where the Straw Hat Pirates meet the two giants. Brogy the Red Ogre will be played by Brendan Murray in the upcoming season. Dorry the Blue Ogre will be played by South African Werner Coester.

The Marines

Captain Smoker

Of course, the marines will once again play an important role in "One Piece" season 2. This time, the Straw Hat Pirates will have to deal with Marine Captain Smoker. He is one of the most interesting characters early on in the manga. He is a man who questions the rules of the marine when they don't correspond to his own idea of justice.

Although he may appear tough and unyielding, he has a strong sense of duty and is prepared to accept the full consequences of his actions. Smoker's characteristic gray area between marine discipline and moral responsibility makes him one of the most complex characters in "One Piece".

He got his powers from the smoke fruit. This gives him the ability to turn his body into smoke and control it at will. This allows him to avoid attacks, trap enemies and suffocate them by enveloping them in smoke. Smoker also uses a weapon with which he can block the abilities of devil fruit users. The dreaded captain is played by British actor Callum Kerr.

Captain Tashigi and Others

One of Smoker's closest confidants is the Marine Captain Tashigi, who is directly subordinate to him. She is a strong swordswoman and has dedicated herself to a clear task: To take all legendary swords from those she believes are undeserving of them. Despite her determination, she sometimes has self-doubt, especially when compared to stronger swordsmen like Zoro. In the live-action series, she is played by American Julia Rehwald. Her last major appearance was in the Netflix film series "Fear Street" in 2021.

Likewise known is the casting of King Cobra. He is played by Sendhil Ramamurthy. Vivi, the king's daughter, will be played by Charithra Chandran. Rob Colletti will take on the role of Wapol, the tyrannical king of the winter kingdom of Drum.

Production

Due to the strikes in Hollywood in 2023, production of "One Piece" season 2 was initially delayed. However, filming finally began in South Africa during summer 2024. The first impressions of the film sets were recently revealed, including the Twin Cape lighthouse, Ipponmatsu's armory and a bakery.

If all goes as planned, the season should be done filming by the end of the year. We will probably get to watch the second season in late summer 2025, with the elaborate post-production and numerous special effects taking up a lot of time. It will therefore likely take some time before we get to see a first trailer for "One Piece" season 2.
