Jack Ryan Movie in Development at Amazon

It remains to be seen whether the film will also be released in cinemas

In June last year, the successful series "Jack Ryan" officially came to an end with its fourth season. But there is no reason to be sad, as a movie is now in development at Amazon.

And for this, John Krasinski will of course once again slip into the role of the titular agent. Also involved: Wendell Pierce, who played Rick's loyal partner James Greer in the series, and Michael Kelly as CIA agent Mike November.

According to Deadline, Andrew Bernstein, who already worked on the second season of the series as director and executive producer and is therefore very familiar with the world of "Jack Ryan", is set to direct the film. The screenplay was written by Aaron Rabin, who was also involved in the fourth season of the series as co-executive producer and author. Production will take place in collaboration with Paramount Pictures and Skydance.

It is not yet clear in which direction the plot of the film will develop. While the "Jack Ryan" series covered a wide range of Jack Ryan's career as a CIA analyst and later as an active CIA agent, the movie could focus on a completely new adventure. It remains to be seen whether Amazon will then also release the film in cinemas or just decide to stream it.

All Movies with Jack Ryan in the Leading Role

Tom Clancy's character Jack Ryan has been a symbol of the espionage genre since the 1980s. The clever CIA analyst and spy, who often becomes an action hero against his will, has found his place in novels and later on the big screen. Several actors - Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine - have taken on the role and added their own touches

1. "The Hunt for Red October" (1990) – Alec Baldwin as Jack Ryan

The first movie adaptation of a Tom Clancy novel with Jack Ryan was "The Hunt for Red October". Alec Baldwin took on the role of the smart CIA analyst. The film, set during the Cold War, is based on Clancy's debut novel and was directed by John McTiernan. "The Hunt for Red October" is one of the classics of espionage films and establishes Jack Ryan as an astute and morally upright hero.

The Soviet submarine captain Marko Ramius (played by Sean Connery) plans to defect to the USA. He steers the nuclear-powered submarine "Red October" towards American waters, causing alarm among the Americans and Russians. Jack Ryan is one of the few who recognizes Ramius' true intentions and tries to convince the US government of his peaceful plans.

The movie received rave reviews and was a commercial success. Alec Baldwin was praised for his performance, but it remained his only appearance as Jack Ryan. The decision not to continue with the role was a big surprise for fans.

2. "Patriot Games" (1992) – Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan

In "Patriot Games", Harrison Ford slips into the role of Jack Ryan. This film is set after the Cold War and deals with Ryan's confrontation with the IRA. Ford gave the character a more down-to-earth and combative flavor and anchored Ryan as an action hero.

While on vacation in London, Ryan saves a member of the British royal family from an attack. This act makes him the target of an extremist wing of the IRA, who want to take revenge on him and his family. Ryan must do everything in his power to protect his family and stop the attackers.

Ford brought depth and urgency to the role, and the movie was a huge success at the box office. He established Jack Ryan as an action hero and brought a new dimension to the character by emphasizing Ryan's moral principles and family ties.

3. "Clear and Present Danger" (1994) – Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan Once Again

Two years after "Patriot Games", Ford took on the role again in "Clear and Present Danger". This film shows Ryan in a political intrigue and is set in the drug environment of Colombia. "Clear and Present Danger" marks the last time Ford played the role of Jack Ryan.

Jack Ryan becomes embroiled in a dangerous conspiracy when he uncovers a secret operation against Colombian drug cartels. As he tries to uncover the truth, he is sabotaged by powerful adversaries who want to keep the operation secret.

4. "The Sum of All Fears" (2002) – Ben Affleck as Jack Ryan

After a long break, Jack Ryan returned in 2002 with "The Sum of All Fears". This time Ben Affleck took on the role of a younger Jack Ryan, and the movie is set after the events of the Cold War.

In "The Sum of All Fears", Jack Ryan tries to prevent a nuclear terrorist attack orchestrated by neo-Nazis to involve the US and Russia in a war. The movie shows Ryan as a still inexperienced analyst who quickly finds himself in an extremely dangerous situation.

Affleck's performance as a young Jack Ryan received mixed reviews, but the movie itself was successful. It was a modern adaptation that made Jack Ryan accessible to a younger audience, but Affleck did not return for more movies.

5. "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit" (2014) – Chris Pine as Jack Ryan

In 2014, Jack Ryan returned to the big screen in another reboot, this time with Chris Pine in the lead role. "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit" offers an updated backstory for the character and once again sets him in the present day.

Young CIA agent Jack Ryan uncovers a Russian conspiracy aimed at destabilizing the US economy. When Ryan travels to Moscow, he becomes embroiled in a conspiracy that leads him on a dangerous mission to prevent a major attack. The movie received mixed reviews and was less successful at the box office than its predecessors, but Pine's version of Jack Ryan brought a modern and energetic interpretation to the character. The movie could not match the success of the Ford era, however.

6. "Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan" (2018-2023) – The Series with John Krasinski

In 2018, Amazon adapted the character for a TV series that ran for four seasons until 2023. John Krasinski took on the role and brought Jack Ryan into the digital age. The series follows Jack Ryan on various missions where he deals with threats such as terrorism, corrupt governments and other international crises. The series is closer to today's geopolitics and has been praised for its realistic and suspenseful stories.
