The brand could be expanded into a new franchise

Exciting rumors from the world of Marvel: Although "Thunderbolts" fell short of expectations at the box office, the MCU film was a big hit with fans and critics alike. And that's exactly why Marvel Studios seems far from writing off the future of these antiheroes. On the contrary: According to insider Alex Perez, work on a sequel is apparently underway behind the scenes.

Perez explained in a recent Q&A with The Cosmic Circus that Marvel is currently focusing on several major projects. These include, among others, "Black Panther 3", "Shang-Chi 2", "Spider-Man 5", the new "X-Men", "Blade", "Midnight Sons", the next "Avengers" movie – and, of course, "Thunderbolts 2".

Another reason for the confidence in the franchise is likely director Jake Schreier. His work on "Thunderbolts" apparently impressed Marvel executives so much that they promptly signed him on for the planned X-Men reboot. A sequel would also fit well into the studio's long-term plans. After all, the Thunderbolts will also make an appearance in "Avengers: Doomsday" and "Avengers: Secret Wars".

What Makes the Thunderbolts So Special – and Why Fans Love the Movie

When Marvel Studios announced "Thunderbolts", many fans were initially skeptical. A team of antiheroes, former villains, and broken characters sounded interesting on paper, but didn't seem like the next big crowd-pleaser in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But it was precisely this unusual mix that ultimately made the film something special. Instead of relying on invincible superheroes and world-changing powers, "Thunderbolts" told a much more human story – and in doing so, stood out noticeably from many other MCU films.

A Team of Outsiders

Unlike the Avengers, the Thunderbolts team isn't made up of celebrated heroes. The group consists of characters who have made mistakes, been manipulated, or are struggling with their past. Characters like Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, John Walker, and Red Guardian all carry their own wounds and traumas.

It is precisely this circumstance that made the dynamics within the group so compelling. The members do not trust one another unconditionally and, in some cases, pursue their own agendas. This gives rise to conflicts that feel much more personal than the classic "good versus evil" stories. The Thunderbolts aren't perfect role models – they're people trying to find their place in a world that often views them as failures or threats.

Less superhero glamour, more emotion

In recent years, Marvel has repeatedly been criticized for relying on a similar formula in many of its films. "Thunderbolts", however, took a slightly different approach. Instead of focusing exclusively on spectacular action and colossal threats, the film placed greater emphasis on its characters and their personal growth.

The story explored feelings of guilt, loneliness, depression, and the search for a new purpose in life. Yelena Belova, in particular, took center stage. Since her first appearance in "Black Widow", she has become one of the most beloved characters in the MCU. In "Thunderbolts", she finally had the opportunity to further develop her personality and become the team's emotional leader. These emotional moments gave the film a depth that pleasantly surprised many viewers.

A Refreshingly Different Team Dynamic

For many years, the Avengers were the heart of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But the Thunderbolts operate by entirely different rules. While the Avengers often acted like a close-knit superhero family, the new team is more reminiscent of a group of reluctant allies. The members argue, make mistakes, and make questionable decisions. It is precisely this unpredictability that ensures the viewer never knows exactly how a situation will play out. This makes the characters feel more relatable and realistic.

On top of that, many team members don't possess classic superpowers. Instead of relying on magic or superhuman abilities, they depend on their combat experience, intelligence, and will to survive. This gives the action scenes a different dynamic and often makes them feel more down-to-earth than in other Marvel movies.

Jake Schrieer's Signature Style

Much of the film's success is attributed to director Jake Schreier. He managed to put the various characters front and center and give them enough room to develop. Many viewers particularly praised the chemistry between the characters and the emotional core of the story. The film proved that the Marvel Universe can also tell stories that rely less on spectacular effects and more on character development.

A Success Despite Weak Box Office Numbers

At the box office, "Thunderbolts" fell short of expectations. Worldwide, the film grossed around $382 million, failing to match the massive success of earlier Marvel productions. But box office figures don't always tell the whole story. On streaming platforms, the film quickly became a hit with audiences and received a lot of positive feedback from fans. Many viewers particularly praised the emotional tone, the characters, and the fresh approach.

At a time when many viewers are oversaturated with classic superhero movies, "Thunderbolts" seems to have struck a chord with fans who want to focus more on the characters and their stories again.
