Fans of the "Shrek" universe have something to look forward to: A new spin-off titled "Donkey" is in the works. And as the title suggests, this time the story will center on Shrek's faithful companion, Donkey. The release date has now been announced.

According to Variety magazine, the film will be released on June 30, 2028. "Donkey" tells the backstory of the beloved character. The film is described as an origin story and is set to show how Donkey became the loyal companion who always stands by Shrek's side. Some particularly exciting news for fans: Eddie Murphy will once again lend his voice to the character.

Charlie Bean is directing the film. The director has already made a name for himself with films such as "The Lego Ninjago Movie" and the live-action adaptation of "Lady and the Tramp". We'll have to be patient for a while longer until the release of "Donkey", but there's no reason to be sad. "Shrek 5" hits theaters on June 30, 2027.

From Fairy Tale Parody to Pop Culture Phenomenon: The Cult Status of the "Shrek" Series

When "Shrek" hit theaters in 2001, no one could have guessed that the story of a grumpy ogre would become one of the most successful and beloved animated franchises of all time. More than two decades later, the "Shrek" series enjoys a cult status that extends far beyond the films themselves. Memes, quotes, and the iconic characters have long been an integral part of pop culture.

A Revolution in Animated Film

In the early 2000s, classic fairy-tale films and family-friendly animated adventures dominated the big screen. "Shrek", however, took a completely different approach. The film humorously poked fun at well-known fairy tale characters and presented a story that delighted both children and adults.

The cheeky dialogue, the numerous pop culture references, and the often surprisingly adult humor made the film something special. While children laughed at the crazy situations, adults discovered numerous jokes and references intended specifically for them. The film's success proved DreamWorks right: "Shrek" became the first film ever to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature and grossed hundreds of millions of dollars worldwide.

Unforgettable Characters

A key reason for the series' cult status is its characters. At the center, of course, is Shrek himself – an ogre who really just wants to be left alone, which is precisely why he comes across as so likable. He's not a classic hero, but an outsider with rough edges.

At his side is the talkative donkey, who quickly became a fan favorite thanks to his unshakable optimism and incessant chatter. Princess Fiona also broke with traditional fairy-tale clichés and became one of the strongest characters in the series. Later, Puss in Boots joined the cast as another iconic character. The charming, big-eyed swordsman even became one of the most beloved characters in the entire DreamWorks universe and got his own spin-off movies.

The Soundtrack as a Key to Success

The music also played a decisive role in the popularity of "Shrek". Hardly any other animated film is as strongly associated with its songs as the adventures of the green ogre. Songs like "All Star" by Smash Mouth and "I'm a Believer" by Smash Mouth became even better known thanks to the films and remain inextricably linked to the series to this day. The music ensured that many scenes became instantly recognizable and still evoke feelings of nostalgia even years later.

The Birth of an Internet Phenomenon

With the rise of social media and meme culture, "Shrek" experienced a second life. Younger generations, in particular, rediscovered the films and turned numerous scenes and quotes into viral hits. The famous "What are you doing in my swamp?" and the opening scene of the first film are now among the most well-known memes on the internet. The characters from "Shrek" regularly appear in videos, images, and parodies, keeping the franchise in the spotlight long after the original film series ended. Few animated films manage to develop such a strong cultural life of their own over the course of decades.

A Timeless Message

Beyond humor and entertainment, "Shrek" conveys a message that remains relevant to this day: It's not about how someone looks, but who they truly are. The films celebrate individuality, friendship, and the acceptance of differences. It is precisely these themes that have helped viewers of all ages identify with the characters. Shrek, Fiona, and their friends are outsiders who find their place in the world – and that is exactly what makes their stories so timeless.

The Legacy of "Shrek"

Even after more than 25 years, enthusiasm for the franchise remains undiminished. New films, spin-offs, and its enduring popularity online show that "Shrek" is far more than just a successful animated series. The green ogre and his friends have secured a permanent place in film history. "Shrek" is not only a classic of animated cinema but a true pop culture phenomenon – and that's exactly why the series continues to enjoy a distinctive cult status to this day.
