Godzilla Minus Zero: The Godzilla Sequel Is Coming!
The release date for the sequel to Godzilla Minus One is not too far away!
News from the King of Monsters! The title of the sequel to the acclaimed "Godzilla Minus One" has been revealed: "Godzilla Minus Zero"! This was last announced as part of "Godzilla Day 2025". The official logo for the sequel was also shared on social media.
According to industry portal The Hollywood Reporter, production is set to begin this year. Filming will take place in Norway and New Zealand. However, there is still no information about the cast or the plot.
The sequel is being made by the same team behind "Godzilla Minus One". Mastermind Takashi Yamazaki is once again in charge as director and screenwriter. "Godzilla Minus Zero" (also known as "Godzilla -0.0") once again comes from the legendary Japanese production studio Toho.
"Godzilla Minus One" was a surprising highlight for many film fans in 2023. The film is set in post-war Japan and combines the classic Kaijū genre with a poignant human drama. With its mix of impressive visual effects and emotional story, "Godzilla Minus One" is considered one of the best contributions in recent "Godzilla" history. The film was celebrated not only in Japan but also internationally and was also awarded an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
A rough time frame for the release of the sequel is already known. The Hollywood Reporter states that a worldwide release is planned for late 2026.
A look back at the previous film: Godzilla Minus One
The Japanese kaiju blockbuster "Godzilla Minus One" sets a striking tone in the series with its setting in post-war Japan and a gloomy mood. Japan lies in ruins – it has already been hit by nuclear attacks and is economically and morally shattered. It is precisely in this context that the eponymous monster Godzilla appears and continues the destruction.
The film was received positively by both critics and "Godzilla" fans. Particularly noteworthy: the Academy Award win for Best Visual Effects was historic. "Godzilla Minus One" was the very first film in the series to be nominated in this category. And the film was also a commercial success: despite a comparatively small budget, it achieved considerable box office results – an indication that the monster genre can still have a strong impact.
Overall, "Godzilla Minus One" marks a return to a more serious, emotional tone in the "Godzilla" series. It not only shows the destruction of a monstrous kind, but also focuses on the people around this monster.

The Godzilla phenomenon
The character Godzilla was originally created by Toho and first appeared in the film of the same name in 1954. From the very beginning, "Godzilla" was more than just a simple monster movie: it was a metaphor for the nuclear threat, for the trauma of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and for the fear of scientific hubris. Since then, Godzilla has become a global pop culture phenomenon: countless films, series, comics, merchandise – the monster is no longer just a Japanese cultural asset, but known worldwide. Over the years, the series has gone through various "eras" – each with different tones, themes and target groups.

Godzilla in Hollywood
Parallel to the Japanese series, there are also American interpretations and productions featuring Godzilla. For example, Legendary Pictures produced the film "Godzilla" in 2014, which attracted a great deal of attention worldwide. These Hollywood films combine monster action with big budgets, an international cast and a global audience. A recent example is "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" from 2024, which is part of the so-called "MonsterVerse", a series of monster films featuring Godzilla, King Kong and other titans.
The difference to the Japanese tradition often lies in the focus: here, spectacular action effects, great show values and global settings dominate – while Japanese films are usually more rooted in local, historical and cultural references. Nevertheless, both versions contribute to keeping Godzilla known and relevant worldwide. For a Western audience, the Hollywood versions usually offer the more accessible introduction – while fans of the classic Godzilla series often prefer the original Japanese films.
The Hollywood version of "Godzilla" has not yet come to an end either: Another movie of the monster-verse is currently being planned. The theatrical release of "Godzilla x Kong 3: Supernova" is scheduled for March 26, 2027. Find out all the other details about the movie in our movie preview!
