George Clooney & Brad Pitt in Ocean's 14!
Matt Damon and Casey Affleck could also return in their roles
Hardly anyone would have anticipated this: George Clooney & Brad Pitt in "Ocean's 14"! 17 years after "Ocean's Thirteen", Danny Ocean is reuniting the cast. In recent years, rumors about another sequel to the main series have been circulating time and again - now it seems that something is really happening with regard to "Ocean's 14"!
According to Deadline, there are initial rumors that both George Clooney and Brad Pitt will be back. In addition, the rest of the well-known ensemble, such as Matt Damon, Casey Affleck and Don Cheadle, could likewise return for the film.
Changes are Happening Behind the Scenes
In terms of directing, however, we are in for a change: Steven Soderbergh, the director of the previous "Ocean's" films, will no longer be behind the camera. He had already announced at the beginning of 2024 that the series was complete for him. Instead, the German Edward Berger, who won several Oscars with "All Quiet on the Western Front" in 2023, will now assume this position.
The previous "Ocean's" movies have grossed over 1 billion dollars. The most recent spin-off, "Ocean's 8", which was led by women, was released in 2018. There are no concrete release plans yet for "Ocean's 14".
The Story Behind the "Ocean's" Film Series
The "Ocean's" film series is a popular series of heist films known for its star-studded cast, clever plots and mix of suspense and humor. There have been four main movies so far: "Ocean's Eleven" (2001), "Ocean's Twelve" (2004), "Ocean's Thirteen" (2007) and the spin-off "Ocean's 8" (2018). This series has its origins in 1960.
Ocean's 11 (1960)
The movie series originally began in 1960 with the film "Ocean's 11", which brought together an ensemble of actors around the legendary "Rat Pack", including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop. Sinatra played the main character Danny Ocean, who, together with a group of old war buddies, plans to rob five casinos in Las Vegas in one night.
Although this movie did not have the same technological sophistication and script twists as the later ones, it was a big hit for its time and offered an entertaining mix of glamour, style and humor. However, the focus was more on the charm of the actors than the depth of the plot, making the film a sort of cult classic.
Ocean's Eleven (2001)
In 2001, director Steven Soderbergh released "Ocean's Eleven", a reinterpretation of the original that served as the kick-off for the modern movie series. The film brings together a high-profile star cast, including George Clooney as Danny Ocean, Brad Pitt as his partner Rusty Ryan, Matt Damon as the talented thief Linus Caldwell and other big names such as Don Cheadle, Andy García and Julia Roberts.
The movie's plot revolves around a daring plan in which Danny Ocean and his crew of 11 specialists want to rob three casinos in Las Vegas at the same time. The mastermind Ocean not only plans the heist to get rich, but also to win back his ex-wife Tess (played by Julia Roberts), who is now in a relationship with casino owner Terry Benedict (Andy García). The movie captivates with a perfect balance of wit, suspense and clever twists, with the interplay between the actors being a particular strength. "Ocean's Eleven" was a massive commercial success and laid the foundations for two sequels.
Ocean's Twelve (2004)
"Ocean's Twelve" was released in 2004 as a direct sequel to the first film and brought back the entire main cast. In this movie, the group faces the aftermath of their first heist when Terry Benedict tracks them down and demands that they return the stolen cash to him. In order to raise the money, the group travels to Europe where they face new challenges, including a competition with a rival master thief, the "Night Fox" (played by Vincent Cassel).
The film's mood is lighter and less serious than the first installment, which some critics felt was exaggerated. Nevertheless, "Ocean's Twelve" offers some exciting and creative heists and further develops the dynamic between the characters. Particularly noteworthy is the guest appearance by Bruce Willis, who plays himself, as well as a humorous scene in which Julia Roberts' character pretends to be the real Julia Roberts.
Ocean's Thirteen (2007)
The third part of the trilogy, "Ocean's Thirteen", was released in 2007. This time, Danny and his crew return to Las Vegas to bring down the corrupt casino owner Willy Bank (played by Al Pacino) after he betrayed one of their own people, Reuben Tishkoff (Elliott Gould).
The movie brings the series back to Las Vegas and once again focuses on a clever casino heist. This time, the focus is on revenge and loyalty among the friends, and the story offers many thrilling and comical moments reminiscent of the first installment. Despite a somewhat generic plot, the movie won over the audience and brought the trilogy to a satisfying conclusion.
Ocean's 8 (2018)
With "Ocean's 8" (2018), the film series was taken in a new direction by focusing on a female crew. In this spin-off, Sandra Bullock plays the role of Debbie Ocean, Danny Ocean's sister. After her release from prison, Debbie plans a spectacular heist during the famous Met Gala in New York, backed by an all-female crew that includes stars such as Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna and Mindy Kaling.
