It's already certain: a sequel to "The Housemaid" is coming! The thriller is currently enjoying an extremely successful international theatrical release and is generating great interest worldwide – a success that the planned sequel is now set to build on. The sequel, entitled "The Housemaid's Secret", will adapt the second book of Freida McFadden's novel series of the same name. Apparantly, the film adaptation has been in development for several months.

The great success of The Housemaid

With a budget of 35 million dollars, the first film was able to earn around 133 million dollars worldwide after just two and a half weeks. It is already clear that "The Housemaid" is set to become one of the biggest successes of recent years for the film studio Lionsgate. A film sequel therefore comes as little surprise.

The leading roles in "The Housemaid" are played by "Euphoria" star Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried. The story revolves around 27-year-old Millie (Sweeney), who is hired as a housemaid by a wealthy couple (Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar). However, the luxurious everyday life soon turns out to be deceptive: dark secrets, intrigues and power games are hidden behind the shiny façade.

Which characters will return in the sequel?

Sweeney is set to return in the sequel in her role as Millie. The film is expected to be directed once again by Paul Feig. Amanda Seyfried recently spoke to the industry magazine Variety. The actress announced that she is very likely to be part of the cast again.

"I almost guarantee that I'm gonna be some small cameo in it, because it's about [Millie] and her working for a new family."

The theatrical release of The Housemaid

It is not yet known whether the entire trilogy of novels will be made into a movie. However, due to the great success of the first film, it seems quite possible that "The Housemaid is Watching" will also be adapted. The first movie "The Housemaid" has been in cinemas since December 19. You can take another look at the latest trailer here.

What those involved have to say about the sequel

Adam Fogelson, Chairman of Lionsgate, had the following to say about the sequel in a statement.

"It's clear from both the global box office and from the outpouring on social media that audiences have responded strongly – and audibly – to the totally unique and truly theatrical experience of The Housemaid and want to know what happens next. We believed in these stories from the very beginning, and we are beyond excited to bring the next chapter of Millie's story to life on-screen [...]."

Director Paul Feig also commented on the success of "The Housemaid" and the planned sequel.

"It's been thrilling to see audiences around the world fall in love with 'The Housemaid' and the incredible work of our talented cast and crew. We're lucky that Freida McFadden has already extended Millie's journey on the page, and that we get to work with Rebecca Sonnenshine and Lionsgate to bring this next story to audiences."

The book series by Freida McFadden

Freida McFadden's "The Housemaid" series of novels is one of the most successful psychological thrillers of recent years. The first novel was published in 2022 and quickly became a bestseller, attracting a great deal of attention worldwide – not least through viral recommendations on social media and strong sales figures.
