Scary Movie 6: The Wayans Brothers' Comeback!
Part 5 was not well received by the fans
Great news for all "Scary Movie" fans: it's been 11 years since part 5 made its way into cinemas. After that, things went quiet around the franchise for a while. But now the wait is over: "Scary Movie 6" is in the making – and the Wayans brothers are back in charge!
The trio of Marlon, Shawn and Keenen Ivory Wayans are to write the script for the sequel, according to Deadline magazine. There is of course also the chance that one of the brothers will also direct the movie. Most fans will certainly appreciate this, as the trio were significantly responsible for the humor and the making of the first two "Scary Movie" films.
Not only was the first movie a financial success in 2002, it also paved the way for a whole series of so-called spoof films that were released in the following years. There should definitely be enough content for "Scary Movie 6": After all, a lot of horror flicks have been released since part 5 that could be properly made fun of.
All films in the Scary Movie series
The "Scary Movie" series has shaped the horror comedy genre and is one of the best-known parody series in film history. With five films released between 2000 and 2013, "Scary Movie" took aim at a number of famous horror films and became a cult phenomenon in its own right. Here is an overview of all five parts of the "Scary Movie" series and the development of the franchise.
Scary Movie (2000) – The start of a cult parody
The first "Scary Movie" film, directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans and released in 2000, laid the foundation for the series and was an instant success. The film primarily parodies the Scream series and I Know What You Did Last Summer, two of the best-known teen horror films of the 1990s. It centers on teenager Cindy Campbell, played by Anna Faris, who would go on to star in all of the films in the series. Cindy and her friends are stalked by a masked killer, and the film uses exaggerated humor to satirize horror movie clichés.
Scary Movie was a huge financial success with box office takings of over 270 million dollars worldwide. The combination of crude comedy, horror elements and pop culture references struck a chord with the times and made the film a comedy horror classic.
Scary Movie 2 (2001) – More parodies, more humor
After the success of the first film, "Scary Movie 2" followed just one year later, once again directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans. This time, the focus is on parodying haunted house horror films, above all The Haunted Mansion and Poltergeist. Cindy Campbell and her friends are invited to spend a night in a haunted house, which leads to a variety of comical and grotesque situations.
Although the movie was commercially successful, reviews were more mixed. Some fans found that the humor was less original than in the first part, and the focus on shocking and exaggerated jokes was not well received by everyone. Nevertheless, "Scary Movie 2" consolidated the franchise and showed that the series was in great demand.
Scary Movie 3 (2003) – New direction and greater variety
With "Scary Movie 3", released in 2003, David Zucker took over as director and the series began to change. Instead of exclusively parodying horror films, "Scary Movie 3" also took on other genres. The third installment satirized The Ring, Signs and 8 Mile in particular, making the parodies broader and the themes more diverse. The characters and actors were also expanded: Charlie Sheen and Leslie Nielsen appeared in roles that enriched the franchise.
The humor was now less crude and aimed more at slapstick and well-known pop culture references. This change of style was well received by audiences and "Scary Movie 3" was a huge success at the box office.
Scary Movie 4 (2006) – The successful formula is repeated
"Scary Movie 4", also directed by David Zucker, was released in 2006 and continued the style of its predecessor. The film parodied War of the Worlds, The Grudge and Saw and once again mixed horror and science fiction elements. Cindy Campbell, again played by Anna Faris, is once again the main character and has to deal with an alien invasion and a haunted house.
Although the film achieved solid box office results, critics and fans increasingly noticed that the jokes and gags no longer seemed as original and fresh as in the first parts. Nevertheless, "Scary Movie 4" was successful enough to spark interest in a fifth installment.
Scary Movie 5 (2013) – A low point for the series
After a long break, "Scary Movie 5" was released in 2013, this time directed by Malcolm D. Lee. Compared to the previous films, there were major changes here: Anna Faris and Regina Hall, who had significantly shaped the franchise, were no longer involved. The story mainly parodied Paranormal Activity, Black Swan and Inception.
"Scary Movie 5" received predominantly negative reviews and is considered the weakest film in the series. Critics and fans complained that the jokes didn't work and the parodies seemed too deliberate and uninteresting. The film flopped at the box office and many thought that this would mean the end of the series.
