The movie was originally scheduled to be released in February 2026, but now things have changed. The release date for the Dr. Seuss adaptation "The Cat in the Hat" has been postponed.

"The Cat in the Hat" is a humorous and imaginative story in which a talking cat with a striking striped hat turns the lives of two children upside down. The character of the cat comes from the classic English children's book of the same name by Dr. Seuss, whose stories have delighted generations of readers.

After several adaptations, a new edition as an animated film is set to follow in 2026. Behind the project are "Kung Fu Panda 3" director Alessandro Carloni and Erica Rivinoja, who worked on the animated film "Trolls", among others. Both therefore have experience in the animation sector.

Warner Bros. has now postponed the start date to November 6, 2026. One reason for this appears to be that a November release is traditionally more suitable for a family film. In the past, Warner Bros. has shown successful animated films such as "Frozen" in cinemas during this period.

The Cat in the Hat – a classic of children's literature

The classic children's book "The Cat in the Hat" was first published in 1957. The story begins on a rainy, gray day when two children – a boy (the narrator) and his sister Sally are home alone and terribly bored. Suddenly, a strange cat with a red and white striped top hat and a bow tie bursts through the door. With his anarchic yet charming appearance, he turns the children's world completely upside down.

The book was a huge success and also had an impact on the approach to early childhood reading education. Seuss' use of simple rhymes, rhythmic language and whimsical illustrations proved that learning to read can also be fun. The tomcat symbolizes the imagination, chaos and freedom of childhood – in contrast to the adult world, which is characterized by order and control.

Film adaptations

The immense success of the book led to several adaptations: A half-hour animated film directed by Hawley Pratt was released and first aired on US television. There is also a series based on "The Cat in the Hat".

Probably the best-known film adaptation was made in 2003 with Mike Myers in the leading role of the cat. In the live-action adaptation, an attempt was made to expand the simple story of the original into a feature-length film. However, the movie was less well received by critics and audiences. Among other things, the exaggerated humor and the questionable tone for children were criticized. For many, the film therefore fell short of expectations.

The author: Dr. Seuss

Dr. Seuss is one of the most influential children's book authors of the 20th century. His works are characterized by quirky characters, memorable rhymes, new word creations and imaginative worlds. His trademark: a mixture of linguistic wit, social criticism and creative imagery.

One of his best-known characters is the Grinch. The story of a grumpy creature who tries to ruin Christmas is a popular Christmas tale – filmed several times, most recently as an animated feature film in 2018. "Horton Hears a Who!" is also popular. Here, Horton the elephant discovers a tiny people on a speck of dust and fights for their recognition – a story about tolerance and civil courage. The story also became famous thanks to the 2008 film adaptation of the same name.

"The Lorax" and "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" are also popular. A film adaptation of the latter is planned for the future. "Oh, the Places You'll Go" will be directed by "Wicked" director Jon M. Chu. The animated musical film is due to be released in cinemas on March 17, 2028 – and even in IMAX format. "Oh, the Places You'll Go" was the last book by Dr. Seuss. It focuses on an unnamed main character who travels through colorful landscapes and finally arrives at a place where everyone is just waiting for something to happen. But first, Dr. Seuss fans can look forward to "The Cat in the Hat". In the meantime, you can take a look at the first trailer!
