It's official now: Dave Bautista will be the new lead actor in "God of War." The "Guardians of the Galaxy" star had already been in talks for the role of the protagonist, Kratos, several weeks ago. Prime Video has now confirmed Bautista's casting, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Bautista thus replaces Ryan Hurst, who was originally set to play the lead role of Kratos in the new Prime Video series. The reason for the recasting: Hurst suffered a severe bicep tear in a stunt accident. To avoid a prolonged production halt, it was decided to bring another actor on board instead. According to Variety, production is expected to resume in the coming weeks. All scenes featuring Bautista's predecessor, Hurst, are set to be reshot.

With Dave Bautista, the series has now secured an actor who, physically speaking, is a perfect fit for the role of Kratos, who is just as muscular as the former wrestling star. In addition, Bautista has also impressed audiences over the years in several other major franchises. One of his most important roles is certainly that of Drax in the "Guardians of the Galaxy" films. The Marvel blockbusters directed and written by James Gunn established him as an international movie star. He also appeared in the "James Bond" adventure "Spectre" as well as the sci-fi films "Blade Runner 2049" and "Dune." Most recently, Bautista played roles in the action thriller "Trap House" and the action comedy "The Wrecking Crew," among other projects.

Here's what God of War is about

"God of War" is based on the hit video game of the same name. The first installment in the series was released over 20 years ago for the PlayStation 2. Even back then, the story centered on the Spartan warrior Kratos, who was tasked with destroying the god of war, Ares. Over the years, several sequels were released. In 2018, the series underwent a narrative reboot: "God of War" for the PlayStation 4 focused on the relationship between Kratos and his son Atreus – apparently a particularly important source of inspiration for the creators of the Prime Video series.

The series adaptation explores the father-son relationship between Kratos and Atreus. Together, the two embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their late wife and mother, Faye. Throughout their adventures, Kratos seeks to teach his son to be a better god – while Atreus seeks to make his father a better human. About half a year ago, a first image of the duo was released, which still featured Ryan Hurst in the role of Kratos:

Top-notch screenwriter

Callum Vinson has been cast in the role of Atreus. Other cast members of the "God of War" series include Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Louis Cunningham as Modi, and Island Austin as Thrud.

Ronald D. Moore, a top-tier screenwriter, is responsible for the adaptation. The showrunner of the "God of War" series is a leading figure in genre television. As early as the 1990s, Moore made a name for himself as one of the most important writers for the "Star Trek" franchise, leaving a lasting impression particularly with his scripts for "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." With his reboot of the science fiction series "Battlestar Galactica" in the 2000s, he created a dark, highly acclaimed reimagining. His current sci-fi series "For All Mankind" is also receiving great acclaim. So fans of "God of War" can certainly look forward to Kratos's future with hope.
