At last! The release date for "The Mummy 4" with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz has been set. As Deadline magazine announced, the new adventure awaits us in cinemas on May 19, 2028. Part 4 will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who also directed the last two "Scream" films and "Abigail". The screenplay was written by David Coggeshall, known for "Orphan: First Kill".

Details of the story are still being kept top secret. However, a few weeks ago a rumor made the rounds that Dwayne Johnson would also return as Scorpion King for "The Mummy 4". The character was introduced in 2001 in "The Mummy Returns", where he acted as the central antagonist. Later, the Scorpion King was even given his own spin-off, which laid the foundations for a separate film series. Whether other actors, including John Hannah, for example, will return from the previous trilogy is still unclear at this stage.

Film tips for fans of The Mummy: adventure, action and ancient legends

When "The Mummy" was released in 1999, the film struck a chord: exotic locations, a pinch of horror, fast-paced action and a good dose of humor. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz turned the adventure about curses, sarcophagi and sandstorms into a modern classic. Those who love the mix of archaeology, myths and tongue-in-cheek suspense will also find numerous films outside the series that convey a similar feeling. Here are some movie tips for fans of "The Mummy".

Indiana Jones series (1981-2023)

Probably the most obvious tip: Indiana Jones. Steven Spielberg's adventure series with Harrison Ford as the charismatic archaeologist is regarded as the blueprint for many later action adventures – including "The Mummy". Whether "Raiders of the Lost Ark" or "The Last Crusade": ancient artifacts, deadly traps and sinister adversaries ensure high tension. At the same time, the series thrives on its humor and the charm of its hero – a combination that also delights Rick O'Connell fans.

National Treasure (2004)

Anyone who particularly likes the archaeological aspect and the treasure hunt should take a look at "National Treasure". In it, Nicolas Cage chases historical mysteries across the USA. Although the supernatural horror is missing here, the pace, the puzzle structure and the feeling of being on the trail of a great conspiracy are strongly reminiscent of the adventure magic of "The Mummy".

Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008)

Suitable for Brendan Fraser fans: this modern Jules Verne adaptation "Journey to the Center of the Earth" takes you deep below the earth's surface. Fantastic creatures, spectacular landscapes and a family-friendly tone create a similar sense of adventure. The film focuses more on fantasy than horror, but shares the mixture of humor, action and the spirit of discovery.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010)

Exotic backdrops, ancient myths and a mysterious artifact with supernatural powers: "Prince of Persia" delivers many of the ingredients that also characterize "The Mummy". Jake Gyllenhaal fights his way through palaces and desert landscapes, while intrigue and magic drive the plot forward. Visually opulent and fast-paced, the film is a clear tip for fans of epic adventures.

Van Helsing (2004)

Anyone who particularly likes the monster elements will get their money's worth with "Van Helsing". Hugh Jackman hunts Dracula, werewolves and other creatures of the night. The film combines action with gothic horror and supernatural threats – similar to "The Mummy", only darker and more rooted in classic monster cinema.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001 & 2018)

A thirst for adventure, ancient artifacts and deadly traps are at the heart of the "Tomb Raider" series. Both the version with Angelina Jolie and the reboot with Alicia Vikander offer fast-paced action in exotic settings. As with "The Mummy", the focus is on strong characters who courageously confront ancient secrets.

The Scorpion King (2002)

A direct spin-off of the "Mummy" universe: Dwayne Johnson slips into the role of the Scorpion King, who was introduced in "The Mummy Returns". "The Scorpion King" focuses more on fantasy action and sword fights, but retains the desert charm and ancient setting. It is an exciting addition for fans of the series.

Pirates of the Caribbean series (2003-2017)

Although the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series is set on the high seas, the parallels are unmistakable: supernatural curses, humorous heroes and spectacular action sequences. Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow brings a similar lightness to the adventure genre as Brendan Fraser did.

The Lost City (2022)

A more modern, self-deprecating version of the adventure film is provided by "The Lost City". Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum get caught up in a treasure hunt in the jungle. The film takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the genre, but still offers classic elements such as puzzles, dangers and exotic locations.

Conclusion

"The Mummy" remains a special mix of adventure, action and light horror. Those who love this combination will find numerous alternatives in the films mentioned – sometimes more humorous, sometimes darker, sometimes more focused on fantasy or history. What they all have in common is a fascination for the unknown and a desire for great journeys of discovery. Perfect for a movie night full of thrills and nostalgia.
