Constantine 2: Sequel to the Keanu Reeves Film Becomes Increasingly Likely
The 2005 film could receive a sequel after all these years
"Constantine" was released in cinemas 20 years ago. A lot has happened since then, the film starring Keanu Reeves has built up a loyal fan base and has become somewhat of a cult film. Rumors of a sequel have therefore been circulating for some time. "Constantine" director Francis Lawrence has now given a promising update on this.
At the center of "Constantine" is the detective John Constantine, played by Keanu Reeves. However, he only devotes himself to special supernatural cases. In the 2005 film, he is contacted by Angela Dodson (Rachel Weisz) to help her solve the death of her twin sister.
Details About Constantine 2
In an interview with the industry portal Collider, Lawrence has now revealed new details about the possible sequel. According to his statements, the sequel is closer than ever to being made. Lawrence is working with producer and writer Akiva Goldsman and lead actor Keanu Reeves on a concept for the film. The director talks about a "really cool" idea. Both he and Goldsman and Reeves are enthusiastic about the project.
What Will It Be About?
Inspiration for the story was sought from the "Constantine" and "Hellblazer" comics. However, it doesn't sound as if a clear comic book template was sought for "Constantine 2". Rather, the sequel should be a mix of several elements and also incorporate new ideas from Lawrence, Goldsman and Reeves. After all, the three of them have now had two decades to think about the plot and characters.
The director's statements therefore sound very hopeful. We are curious to see whether the project can be realized after all these years and will of course keep you up to date.
John Constantine's Film and Series Appearances
John Constantine has not only appeared in the 2005 film. The character has also found his way into several other productions. Here we would like to introduce you to some of John Constantine's film and series appearances in more detail.
Constantine (Movie)
John Constantine's first major appearance on the big screen was in the 2005 film "Constantine", in which Keanu Reeves took on the role of the charismatic exorcist and occult investigator. The movie is based on the Hellblazer comic series, but takes some liberties with the portrayal of the character. In the movie, Constantine is portrayed as a man marked by his demons from the past and his own mistakes, desperately trying to save his soul by fighting against the dark forces.
Despite criticism for deviating from the comic book, the film found a large fan base and did much to bring the character of Constantine to a wider audience. Keanu Reeves' portrayal was often praised for its gritty intensity, even though it differs significantly from the British version of the character, who was originally a rather rough, mocking and less sympathetic type.
Constantine (Series)
In 2014, John Constantine appeared in his own series, although it was canceled after just one season. The NBC series starred Matt Ryan in the lead role. Ryan, who later also took on the role of Constantine in other productions, convincingly brought the cynical but also compassionate side of the character to the screen. The series followed Constantine as he protects the world from supernatural threats while battling his own guilt and demons of the past.
Although "Constantine" was canceled after just one season due to lower viewership and other challenges, the series found a loyal following and launched Ryan into the character's role, which was later continued in other media.
Constantine in the Arrowverse
Although the TV series "Constantine" came to an early end, the character lived on in the so-called "Arrowverse" - a shared universe of many DC series that includes series such as "Arrow", "The Flash", "Legends of Tomorrow" and "Supergirl". Matt Ryan returned as Constantine in various series episodes.
Through his role in the Arrowverse, Constantine became a stable character within the DC series universe, and Matt Ryan's portrayal was hailed as one of the most successful realizations of the character. His mix of humor, cynicism and foibles was particularly well received by fans.
