Rumor: Star Fox movie is in development
Is Nintendo bringing Fox McCloud back to the big screen?
"Star Fox" fans, take note: According to an insider report, Nintendo is working on a film adaptation of the popular video game series! Following the success of other video game adaptations, Fox McCloud could now be getting his big-screen adventure. Hollywood insider Daniel Richtman reports that the "Star Fox" movie is currently in development at Illumination. The animation studio has already produced the "Super Mario" movies in collaboration with Nintendo.
There's no official confirmation yet – but the timing couldn't be better. After all, Fox McCloud just made an appearance in the "Super Mario Galaxy Movie." He was voiced by "Top Gun: Maverick" star Glen Powell. Whether that will also be the case in the potential "Star Fox" movie remains to be seen.
Star Fox Remake for the Switch 2
But that's not the only "Star Fox" news: there's also news to report on the gaming front. Nintendo has officially confirmed a "Star Fox" remake for the Switch 2! The game is set to release on June 25, 2026.
So the appearance in "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" might have been just the beginning. The sequel is currently still playing in theaters. In our META movie review, you can find out what we think of the film and how other critics rate it. We'll of course keep you updated on all further news regarding the "Star Fox" movie.
The World of Star Fox
To better understand the current developments surrounding a potential Star Fox movie adaptation, it's worth taking a look at the origins of the series and its role within the larger Nintendo universe.
At the heart of "Star Fox" is the charismatic pilot Fox McCloud, who, as team leader, flies through the Lylat System alongside his comrades to fend off various threats. The games combine classic space action with a clear heroic narrative and have become an integral part of the Nintendo portfolio since their debut in the early 90s. Particularly influential was the mix of futuristic space battles, iconic characters, and recurring antagonists like Andross.
Star Fox and Super Smash Bros.
Also noteworthy is the close connection between the "Star Fox" universe and the broader Nintendo character landscape, particularly the world of "Super Mario". Both franchises not only share the same creative roots at Nintendo but also frequently intersect in spin-offs, crossover games, and joint appearances in pop culture. Characters from "Star Fox," for example, appear in games like "Super Smash Bros.," where characters from the "Super Mario" universe also make appearances, further blurring the lines between the brands.
The Super Mario Movies
This thematic connection is now increasingly reflected in Nintendo's cinematic ambitions. Following the huge success of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," the studio is continuing to work with Illumination to expand this cinematic universe. The next step was recently taken with "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie." The sequel has been in theaters since April 1, 2026. If you haven't seen the movie yet, you can read here what "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" is about:
The sequel picks up where the first part left off. In "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," Mario and Luigi proved themselves as heroes and defeated the turtle villain Bowser. The two have since left their everyday life in Brooklyn behind. Instead, they've now found a new home in the fantastical realms of the Mushroom Kingdom. There, they help out wherever they can and have plenty of fun.
Only Princess Peach occasionally struggles with her unknown origins. Meanwhile, Bowser – now shrunken into a mini-villain – has turned into a wannabe artist and still dreams of Princess Peach. Much to Mario's displeasure, as he apparently feels drawn to the princess himself. Soon, however, the plumber faces a whole different problem: Bowser Jr. wants to help his father regain his former glory – and the little rascal seems willing to stop at nothing to make it happen.
A Nintendo film universe?
In the context of the new "Super Mario" movie, it comes as no surprise that there is now speculation about a possible film adaptation of "Star Fox." Should the project actually come to fruition, it could become part of a growing Nintendo film universe in which familiar characters like Fox McCloud might appear more frequently on the big screen in the future. Rumors that such a film universe is in the works keep circulating. You can find out more about it here.
