God of War: Dave Bautista in talks to play the new Kratos
Ryan Hurst was originally supposed to play the lead role in the Prime Video series
Dave Bautista is being considered as the new lead actor for "God of War." The "Guardians of the Galaxy" star would replace Ryan Hurst, who was originally set to play the role of the protagonist Kratos in the Prime Video series.
Hurst suffered a severe biceps tear in a stunt accident. The injury would have forced production on the series to come to a halt for an extended period. As a result, the decision was made to recast the role. If a deal is reached with Bautista, production is scheduled to continue this fall in Vancouver, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
God of War as a video game
"God of War" is based on the hit video game of the same name. The series adaptation centers on the father-son relationship between Kratos and Atreus. Together, the two embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their late wife and mother, Faye. Throughout their adventures, Kratos seeks to teach his son to be a better god – while Atreus seeks to make his father a better human.
The first video game in the "God of War" series was released over 20 years ago for the PlayStation 2. Even back then, the story revolved around the Spartan warrior Kratos, who is tasked with destroying the god of war, Ares. Over the years, several sequels were released, until the series underwent a narrative reboot in 2018. "God of War" for the PlayStation 4 focused primarily on the relationship between Kratos and Atreus. The creators of the Prime Video series were apparently particularly inspired by the story told in that game about Faye's ashes.
Acclaimed showrunner for the series
Callum Vinson was cast in the role of Atreus. Other cast members of the "God of War" series include Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Louis Cunningham as Modi, and Island Austin as Thrud.
Behind the scenes, Ronald D. Moore is at the helm. The screenwriter created the series adaptation and serves as showrunner. Moore made a name for himself back in the 1990s as one of the most important and best screenwriters for the "Star Trek" franchise, particularly on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." He caused a sensation in the 2000s with his acclaimed reboot of the science fiction series "Battlestar Galactica." Most recently, he impressed audiences with the sci-fi series "For All Mankind," which has also received widespread praise.
Dave Bautista: God of War wouldn't be his first major franchise
With former wrestler Dave Bautista, "God of War" would feature a lead actor who has secured a firm place in Hollywood in recent years. The "Guardians of the Galaxy" films by director and screenwriter James Gunn have contributed significantly to this. In the Marvel blockbusters, he won the hearts of countless viewers as Drax the Destroyer.
But Bautista hasn't just made an impression in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He's also appeared in other major franchises, including the "James Bond" movie "Spectre" as well as the sci-fi films "Blade Runner 2049" and "Dune." If he does indeed land the role of Kratos, "God of War" would be yet another popular franchise to add to his filmography.
