Rumor: Nintendo Is Working on a Metroid Movie
The cinematic Nintendo universe looks set to expand!
A "Metroid" adventure on the big screen? This project could soon become a reality. According to insider Daniel Richtman, Nintendo is probably working on a film adaptation of the classic.
The focus is on the legendary bounty hunter Samus Aran, who explores foreign planets, fights parasitic aliens and encounters galactic conspiracies. The series is mainly known for its dense atmosphere and a mixture of action, exploration and sci-fi horror. It is not without reason that it is repeatedly associated with Ridley Scott's "Alien".
It is still unknown which actress will take on the iconic role. According to some insiders, names such as Brie Larson and Charlize Theron are being bandied about. However, it must be emphasized that these are rumours. There is no studio, director or start date.
According to recent reports, however, Universal Pictures is said to be interested in the rights. The aim could be to integrate "Metroid" into the cinematic Nintendo universe alongside the "Super Mario Bros." films.
Film tips for Metroid fans: dark sci-fi horror, lonely heroes and alien worlds
For decades, the "Metroid" series has stood for a very special mix of science fiction, isolation, exploration and subliminal horror. Fans not only love the gameplay, but above all the atmosphere: deserted planets, organic threats, a taciturn heroine and the feeling of being alone in a hostile world. If you are looking for films that capture exactly this "Metroid" feeling, you will find them surprisingly often in the cinema. These movie tips are aimed at anyone who wants to continue Samus Aran's adventures away from the console.
Alien (1979) & Aliens (1986): The obvious origin
No movie is compared to "Metroid" as often as Ridley Scott's "Alien" – and for good reason. The claustrophobic atmosphere, the slow exploration of dark corridors and the constant threat of an unknown life form are strongly reminiscent of the first Metroid parts. The iconic villain Ridley is also a clear homage to the Xenomorph.
While "Alien" tends to emphasize the horror aspect, James Cameron's "Aliens" delivers more action and is reminiscent of later "Metroid" titles such as Metroid Prime 3 in its pace and arsenal of weapons. Both films are must-sees for "Metroid" fans.
Annihilation (2018): Strange worlds and existential horror
"Annihilation" gets to the heart of what makes "Metroid" so fascinating: a mysterious zone, inexplicable phenomena and the feeling that the environment itself is the enemy. The film thrives on surreal images, biological horror and a constantly smouldering threat. As in "Metroid", the focus is not just on fighting, but on understanding a strange world. The protagonist is – in the spirit of Samus Aran – a strong, calm figure who faces an incomprehensible force alone.
Event Horizon (1997): Sci-fi meets horror
For fans of the dark, almost nightmarish side of "Metroid", "Event Horizon" is an intense trip. The film combines space travel with cosmic horror and creates an oppressive atmosphere reminiscent of the darker sections of the "Metroid" games. Abandoned ships, ominous architecture and a threat beyond human comprehension – all of this could have come straight from a particularly sinister "Metroid" level.

Prospect (2018): Loneliness and survival on an alien planet
The indie film "Prospect" is an insider tip for "Metroid" fans. On a dangerous, unknown planet, a young woman fights for survival – far away from civilization, with limited resources and constantly threatened by the environment and other people. The focus on isolation, exploration and atmosphere is strongly reminiscent of the feeling of roaming through hostile terrain alone as Samus Aran. Less bombast, but all the more immersion.
Dredd (2012): A taciturn icon in armor
Even though "Dredd" is not science fiction horror in the classic sense, there are striking parallels to "Metroid". The main character speaks little, wears his armor almost constantly and looks more like a force of nature than a classic hero. The uncompromising staging, the minimalist storytelling and the focus on the physical presence of the main character make the film surprisingly appealing for "Metroid" fans.
Moon (2009): Isolation in space
"Moon is quieter, more thoughtful and more emotional than many other sci-fi films, but perfectly captures the feeling of loneliness in space. A single person, a remote station and a truth that gradually comes to light – this is exactly the mood we know from "Metroid" moments away from the action.
Conclusion: Metroid has long been cinema
Even without an official "Metroid" film adaptation, the spirit of the series has long lived on in the cinema. Whether horror, action or psychological science fiction – many films pick up on precisely those elements that make "Metroid" so unique. For fans, this means that those who love Samus Aran's atmosphere will also find plenty of cinematic discoveries away from the console.
