Filming for "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" has kicked off! That's what James Gunn announced via his social media channels. The DC Studios boss is delighted about the start of filming and is impressed by Milly Alcock as Supergirl. Fans also get to see a first photo. It shows the Supergirl actress on the set of the film.
Supergirl's Parents Cast
After Jason Momoa was cast as bounty hunter Lobo, The Hollywood Reporter recently informed about the casting of Supergirl's parents. The roles are to be played by "Oppenheimer" actor David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham from the Netflix series "1899".
"Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" is to be based on the comic of the same name by author Tom King. Australian Craig Gillespie is responsible for directing. He knows all about strong female roles, having directed movies such as the Oscar-winning "I, Tonya" and "Cruella" in the past. "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" is due to be released in theaters on June 26, 2026.

Originally introduced as Superman's cousin, she has created her own identity and history, making her a heroine in her own right. Her adventures range from classic comic books to the first feature film and modern TV series. Here we take a look at the various interpretations and developments of Supergirl.
Supergirl's first movie
Supergirl's first major appearance in cinemas took place in 1984. The film "Supergirl", in which Helen Slater played the leading role, was directed by Jeannot Szwarc. However, the film can be classified as a commercial failure. The reviews were also rather negative. For some fans, the film is nevertheless a nostalgic piece of the 80s.
Supergirl in Smallville
In the show "Smallville", the character is played by Laura Vandervoort. Kara Zor-El is introduced as the cousin of Clark Kent (Superman), who lands on Earth in a space capsule after years of sleep. Initially suffering from mild Kryptonian amnesia, Kara is on a quest to find her cousin in order to find her family. Her portrayal in "Smallville" differs from other versions, as Kara is initially a rather impulsive and unpredictable heroine who has difficulty integrating into human society. In the seventh season of the series, the character takes on an important role. Supergirl becomes an important ally for Clark.
Supergirl in the Arrowverse
Supergirl's biggest development in recent years has been on the small screen. In 2015, the series "Supergirl" debuted, starring Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers (the earthbound identity of Kara Zor-El). The series explored themes of identity, self-discovery and living in the shadow of Superman, with Kara increasingly established as a heroine in her own right. Unlike other superhero series, Supergirl often set a positive, optimistic tone and emphasized the importance of teamwork and community.
Alongside Supergirl herself, the character of Alex Danvers, Kara's sister, played a central role as her ally and mentor. Characters such as journalist Cat Grant and scientist Lena Luthor also took on important roles.
The series "Supergirl" was part of the so-called "Arrowverse", a collection of superhero series all set in the same universe, including "Arrow", "The Flash" and "Legends of Tomorrow". This allowed crossover events and collaborations between the various heroes, giving Supergirl an even bigger stage.
Supergirl in The Flash
Aside from her own film and series projects, Supergirl has also repeatedly forged links with the wider DC universe. In recent years, she was part of the film "The Flash", in which Sasha Calle took on the role of Supergirl. This portrayal of Kara Zor-El showed an alternative version of the superheroine living in a parallel dimension. Calle's portrayal brought a new interpretation of Supergirl to the big screen.
