Blade: Mahershala Ali Opens Up About the Marvel Reboot

It all seemed to be in place: Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali was set to follow in the footsteps of icon Wesley Snipes for Marvel and become the ultimate vampire hunter in a new "Blade" movie. But things turned out differently: As Ali confirmed in an interview with the entertainment magazine GQ, he is no longer involved in the project.

The actor emphasizes that he does not see himself as the reason for the project's failure. At the same time, he also commented on those in charge at Marvel Studios.

""No offense to them. I've been doing this professionally for pushing 30 years now, and one thing I've learned is that what is for you is for you and what is not is not. For whatever reason, that project is not for me. [...] You had me under contract, they have billions of dollars, if they wanted to do the movie, we would've done the movie. So we're not doing the movie."

Kevin Feige also recently spoke about his perspective. On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the Marvel Studios boss expressed his disappointment over the failure to host Josh Horowitz:

"I am feeling like a gigantic loser and failure that we didn't get off the ground with Mahershala."

Long in the works – and a brief Blade appearance

As recently as 2024, Feige was still extremely optimistic and confident that the character would find his way into the MCU. Discussions about the "Blade" reboot starring Ali have been going on for much longer. The project was already being discussed as early as 2019. Two years later, the actor could even be heard in a post-credit scene in the MCU film "Eternals." So Ali's appearance was already in the works back then. But problems kept cropping up. According to Deadline, these included the 2023 Hollywood strike as well as the exit of several directors.

At one point, the film was set to be directed by Bassam Tariq. A collaboration on the "Blade" project didn't materialize – instead, Ali and Tariq are now shooting another film together. "Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother" will receive a limited theatrical release on September 25, 2026. You can watch the trailer here:

Who is Blade?

"Blade" is a vampire hunter in the Marvel Universe. The character was created in 1973 by Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan and is a so-called dhampir – half human, half vampire. As a result, Blade possesses superhuman powers, is immune to many of the typical weaknesses of vampires, and has made it his mission to hunt these blood-sucking creatures. Unlike many classic Marvel heroes, Blade operates primarily in the darker, horror-themed realm of the comic book universe.

Long before the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) came into existence, Blade enjoyed great success on the big screen. Wesley Snipes portrayed the vampire hunter in "Blade" (1998), "Blade II" (2002), and "Blade: Trinity" (2004). The first film, in particular, is considered a cornerstone of modern superhero cinema and paved the way for later comic book adaptations.

In 2024, Snipes finally made a surprise return as Blade in "Deadpool & Wolverine." His highly acclaimed cameo playfully referenced the character's legacy and provided many fans with one of the film's biggest surprise moments.

Mahershala Ali seemed like the perfect choice to take over the role for a new generation. The two-time Academy Award winner has long been regarded as one of Hollywood's finest character actors. He won his first Oscar for Supporting Actor in 2017 for "Moonlight," followed two years later by his second Oscar for "Green Book."

Ali is known to a wide audience for TV series such as "House of Cards," "Luke Cage," and the third season of "True Detective." He has also appeared in films such as "Hidden Figures," "Alita: Battle Angel," "The Hunger Games," and most recently in "Jurassic World: Rebirth." He's also the voice actor for Miles Morales' uncle Aaron in the animated hit "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse."

So, Ali already has some Marvel experience under his belt. "Blade" was supposed to be his next project. It remains to be seen what the future holds for the character – and whether another actor will ultimately take on the mantle of Marvel's iconic vampire hunter.
