After "A Minecraft Movie" is currently a huge box office hit, Hollywood is continuing its course towards successful video game adaptations: Paramount has officially confirmed "The Angry Birds Movie 3" – and it finally has a release date! According to Deadline, the third part of the popular animated series is set to open in cinemas on January 29, 2027.

The fact that "Angry Birds" is returning to the big screen comes as a surprise to many. After all, the first part was released in 2016, followed by part two in 2019. While the first movie was a huge success with over 352 million dollars worldwide, the sequel only made around half that amount with just under 148 million – which often means the end of a film series. However, the current hype surrounding movie adaptations of successful games also seems to be breathing new life into this franchise.

John Rice, who previously directed "The Angry Birds Movie 2", is once again behind the camera. His co-director at the time, Thurop Van Orman, is on board as screenwriter and producer.

Fans can look forward to the return of the original voice actors: Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride and Rachel Bloom are back. New additions to the cast include Emma Myers, Keke Palmer, Tim Robinson and Lily James. However, their roles have not yet been revealed.

From an App to the Big Screen: The History of the Angry Birds Films and Series

What began as a simple mobile game in 2009 has developed into a real multimedia phenomenon over the years. We are talking about "Angry Birds", one of the most successful mobile games of all time with over five billion downloads worldwide. But the angry birds and the nasty green pigs are no longer just active on smartphones – they have also made the leap into the world of films and series. And with remarkable success.

The First Film: The Angry Birds Movie (2016)

After the gigantic success of the game, a film adaptation was not long in coming. "The Angry Birds Movie" was released in cinemas in May 2016 and told an original background story about how the conflict between the birds and the pigs actually came about. It centered on the bird Red, an outsider with anger issues, who, along with his friends Chuck and Bomb, fights against the sneaky pigs who have stolen the birds' eggs.

The movie combined humor, action and a bit of passion – just the right recipe for a family audience. Financially, the first part was a complete success: the film grossed over 352 million US dollars worldwide. The colorful animated film was particularly well received by children.

The Angry Birds Movie 2 (2019)

Despite its success, the sequel was three years in the making. In 2019, "The Angry Birds Movie 2" was released, continuing the story. This time, birds and pigs even have to put their enmity aside to stand together against a new threat: the purple bird Zeta, ruler of Eagle Island. The new dynamic brought a breath of fresh air to the story and the joke density was increased once again.

Some critics even praised the second part as being better than the first one. However, despite the positive response, the film was unable to match its predecessor financially: 147.8 million dollars worldwide meant a drop of more than 50 percent. Nevertheless, the movie proved that the franchise has potential beyond the game.

The Series: Angry Birds Toons and More

In addition to the movies, Rovio also expanded the "Angry Birds" universe into series. "Angry Birds Toons", a classic cartoon series with short episodes that told the birds' little adventures in a humorous way, was released back in 2013. A total of three seasons were produced.

Further series followed, including "Angry Birds Stella", which focused on the pink bird Stella and her friends, and "Angry Birds Blues", which focused on the three blue baby birds. This was followed in 2020 by the Netflix series "Angry Birds: Summer Madness", which featured modern animation and told new stories.

Conclusion

"The Angry Birds" franchise has shown how a simple game can become the basis for a successful film and series world. Even though the second film fell short of expectations commercially, interest in "The Angry Birds" remains high.
