Jason Momoa in the "Helldivers" movie! According to multiple media reports, the superstar has been cast in the highly anticipated video game adaptation. Not only that: the movie's release date has finally been confirmed!

The project is being produced by Sony Pictures and PlayStation. The director was announced several months ago: Justin Lin, known for the "Fast and Furious" series and "Star Trek: Beyond". The script is written by Gary Dauberman, who wrote the screenplays for the Stephen King two-parter "It", among other things.

Which character Momoa will play in the "Helldivers" film remains to be seen. This is not the actor's first role in a video game adaptation. The "Aquaman" star was most recently seen in "A Minecraft Movie". He will also be part of the cast of the "Street Fighter" movie adaptation. Momoa also has "Dune 3" and "Supergirl" lined up for 2026.

When will Helldivers be released?

However, a little patience is still required before the "Helldivers" movie can be seen on the big screen. The release date has been set for November 10, 2027. We will, of course, keep you up to date on any further developments!

The video game

What began as an insider tip from Swedish developer Arrowhead Game Studios became a global phenomenon. Since then, millions of players have been fighting side by side – or stumbling each other into ruin.

The story of "Helldivers" is set in a dystopian future in which humanity is united under a totalitarian government called "Super Earth." Players take on the role of elite soldiers (Helldivers) who must defend Super Earth and spread its influence throughout the galaxy. They secure resources, conquer planets, and fight in epic battles against enemy aliens.

What sets "Helldivers" apart from many military shooters is its satirical undertone. The propaganda language, patriotic slogans, and pathos are deliberately reminiscent of science fiction satires such as "Starship Troopers." The humor arises from the discrepancy between heroic aspirations and chaotic reality: while the narrator speaks of glory and self-sacrifice, his own team is being wiped out by a misplaced air strike.

The Helldivers phenomenon

From the outset, "Helldivers" focused uncompromisingly on co-op gameplay. Up to four players fight together on battlefields, complete mission objectives, and have to coordinate closely. Friendly fire is always active – every shot, every grenade, and every orbital strike can also hit allies.

It is precisely this risk that makes it so appealing. Success is only possible if the team communicates, assigns roles, and covers each other's backs. At the same time, mishaps and bad decisions create unforgettable moments. An incorrectly entered code for a supply drop can cause bombs to rain down from the sky instead of ammunition – with explosive consequences.

With "Helldivers 2," the series switched from a top-down view to a third-person perspective. The action moved closer to the characters, becoming more intense, more direct, more cinematic. However, the basic principle remained the same. The success of the series can be attributed to several factors, including humor and self-irony: the satirical exaggeration makes the game accessible and sets it apart from the serious tone of many other games in the genre.

Jason Momoa and his films

We can now look forward to seeing what the film adaptation will look like. With Jason Momoa, they were able to sign a big name from Hollywood. He gained international fame as Khal Drogo in the hit HBO series "Game of Thrones" before finally becoming a blockbuster star as Aquaman in the DC universe – both in "Justice League" and in the standalone "Aquaman" films. He also gave a convincing performance as Duncan Idaho in Denis Villeneuve's science fiction epic "Dune." Series fans also know him from the post-apocalyptic Apple TV+ production "See," in which he played the lead role. 2026 will be a big year for the actor. After recently appearing in the action film "The Wrecking Crew," we can also look forward to "Street Fighter", "Dune 3" and "Supergirl".
