Gibson described the script as an "acid trip"

After more than 20 years, he is to be resurrected: Mel Gibson is shooting the sequel "The Passion of the Christ 2"! Now there's an update on the sequel's plans.

Filming is currently slated to start in 2025. The new movie will once again take up the biblical story of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Gibson has indicated that it will be a non-linear narrative, incorporating different time periods and possibly fictional elements.

According to Collider, the script has undergone several revisions in recent years. Gibson and his co-writer Randall Wallace - Oscar-nominated for "Braveheart" - have allegedly written at least six drafts of the screenplay. In April, Wallace confirmed that the final version was now complete. Gibson himself described the script as an "acid trip" - whatever that may mean. There is already much speculation as to whether the movie will take us to the afterlife, in other words, present a picture of heaven or hell.

Actor Jim Caviezel has already confirmed his return in the role of Jesus. Filming will take place on the island of Malta next year, so a theatrical release of "The Passion of the Christ 2" in 2026 seems feasible.

The Controversy Surrounding Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ"

The film "The Passion of the Christ", directed by Mel Gibson and released in 2004, caused a worldwide stir and divided audiences. The movie covers the last twelve hours of Jesus Christ's life, focusing on his trial, torture and crucifixion, and remains shockingly brutal in many moments. While it has been praised by many Christians as a powerful and spiritually poignant portrayal of Jesus' suffering, the movie has also been the subject of heavy criticism from various quarters. These controversies include accusations of anti-Semitism, the extreme depiction of violence, and the way the movie manipulates religious symbols and emotions.

The Portrayal of Violence

A key point of criticism of "The Passion of the Christ" is the extreme depiction of violence. Much of the film focuses on the physical torment that Jesus suffered, particularly during the scourging and crucifixion. Critics have accused Gibson of glorifying violence and portraying it in a way that is more for shock value than to offer a deeper spiritual reflection. The movie shows the brutal mistreatment of Jesus in detail and often in a way that is difficult to bear, which led some viewers to question whether this was really necessary to convey the spiritual message of the Passion.

Supporters of the film, on the other hand, argued that the violence was necessary to authentically portray the reality of Jesus' suffering and to make viewers aware of the intensity of this sacrifice. In this view, supporters emphasize that the film is so powerful and emotionally gripping precisely because it does not conceal the physical dimension of Jesus' suffering.

Accusations of Anti-Semitism

Arguably the biggest controversy surrounding the film concerns the portrayal of Jews and accusations that "The Passion of the Christ" reproduces anti-Semitic stereotypes. Throughout the history of Christianity, Jews have repeatedly been accused of being the "murderers of Christ", leading to centuries of persecution and discrimination. Critics, including Jewish organizations such as the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), accused the movie of reinforcing this problematic notion.

In the film, Jewish religious leaders such as the High Priest Caiaphas are portrayed as unscrupulous figures who play a central role in the condemnation and crucifixion of Jesus. This portrayal raised fears that the film could revive latent anti-Semitic prejudices. The Roman authorities, in particular Pontius Pilate, are portrayed as hesitant, which relativizes Rome's historical responsibility for the execution of Jesus and shifts the blame more strongly onto the Jewish side.

Mel Gibson firmly rejected the accusations of anti-Semitism and explained that his film adheres strictly to the Gospels. He emphasized that "The Passion of the Christ" is not an indictment of the Jewish people, but focuses on the sins of all mankind.

Religious and Cultural reactions

The reactions to "The Passion of the Christ" were strongly influenced by religious and cultural backgrounds. Many conservative Christians praised the film as one of the most accurate and emotionally powerful portrayals of the Passion of Christ ever brought to the screen. For them, the movie was an opportunity to reclaim the centrality of the Passion to the Christian faith.

On the other hand, liberal Christians, non-Christians and secular viewers were put off by the graphic depiction of violence and the religious message. They criticized the movie as theologically one-sided and felt that the violence was exaggerated and manipulative.

There were also concerns from a theological perspective. Some theologians criticized the film for focusing excessively on the physical pain of Jesus while neglecting the spiritual and moral dimensions of the Christian faith, such as Jesus' teachings on love, forgiveness and justice.

Gibson's Personal Controversies

The controversy surrounding the film was exacerbated by Mel Gibson's own behavior. Even before the film's release, Gibson was controversial within the church due to his conservative Catholic views and his affiliation with a traditionalist movement. Later, in 2006, Gibson was cited with anti-Semitic slurs during an arrest for drunk driving, which further fueled the accusations against him and his film.

Ultimately, the controversy surrounding "The Passion of the Christ" demonstrates the challenge of dealing with religious themes in a way that is both respectful and sensitive to historical and cultural contexts.
