Release Date for "Street Fighter" Movie Announced
The Philippou brothers will no longer be directing the project
"Street Fighter" fans listen up! The new live-action film adaptation of the popular fighting game finally has a release date!
As Variety reports, the date has been set for March 20, 2026. Sony Pictures will be responsible for the live-action adaptation in collaboration with Legendary Pictures and Japanese video game developer Capcom. It remains to be seen who will direct the film, however. Last week, "Talk To Me" creators Danny and Michael Philippou announced that they would no longer be working on the movie adaptation. Apparently, this is due to scheduling difficulties.
Initially, Legendary and Capcom had hoped to start production on the "Street Fighter" movie sooner rather than later. According to The Hollywood Reporter, however, the Philippou brothers first want to devote themselves to the horror project "Bring Her Back", which is once again being produced by A24. A "Talk To Me" prequel is likewise in the pipeline.
This is not the first time that "Street Fighter" has been adapted into a movie. Universal Pictures brought an adaptation starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Kylie Minogue to cinemas back in 1994 - but it wasn't particularly convincing. The movie adaptation even made it onto Time Magazine's list of the worst video game adaptations of all time in 2009. Let's hope that the new "Street Fighter" movie is more of a hit.
