Rumor: Agent Venom movie in the works
A fresh face could be brought into the SSU
With "Venom: The Last Dance", Tom Hardy's last adventure as Eddie Brock can currently be seen in cinemas. Nevertheless, it seems that Sony Pictures is already working on further projects with the symbiote. An "Agent Venom" film is reportedly in the works.
The rumor comes from the experienced Hollywood insider DanielRPK.
In the comics, Flash Thompson, a former high school bully and friend of Peter Parker, takes on the role of Agent Venom. After a serious war injury in which he loses both legs, he becomes part of the government program "Project Rebirth". As a result, he is bonded with the "Venom" symbiote. This enables him to work as a secret agent with superhuman powers. Unlike Eddie Brock, however, the length of time Thompson can wear the symbiote and the situations in which he is allowed to use it are precisely controlled.
A new start for the "Venom" series would be a smart move by Sony. After all, it would give them the opportunity to keep Venom in the SSU for the long term and tell new creative stories. It could also bring a fresh face into the franchise. It is unlikely to fail due to fan interest: "Venom: The Last Dance" has already grossed over 300 million dollars at the box office.
The Venom series at a glance
The "Venom" film series has become an important part of Sony's own "Spider-Man" universe since it began in 2018, telling the fascinating story of the anti-hero Venom. The series brought the famous symbiote, one of the best-known characters from the Spider-Man comics, to the big screen and quickly found a large fan base.
Venom (2018) : The beginning of the symbiote saga
"Venom" from 2018 brought the origin story of Eddie Brock and Venom to the cinema in a way that was very different from the previous "Spider-Man" films. The story begins with Eddie Brock, an investigative journalist looking into the shady Life Foundation company and its CEO Carlton Drake. Drake is conducting experiments in his laboratory with alien symbiotes that he found on a space mission funded by the Foundation. Eddie comes into contact with one of these symbiotes – Venom – and becomes its new host.
In contrast to traditional superhero films, Venom shows the dark and chaotic aspects of an anti-hero. The film focuses on the dynamic relationship between Eddie and Venom, which fluctuates between friendship and enmity. Tom Hardy, who plays the role of Eddie Brock, adds humorous nuances to the character and creates an almost grotesque buddy comedy between man and symbiote.
The film was extremely successful commercially and grossed over 856 million dollars worldwide. Critics, however, were mixed about the film: some praised the unusual approach and Tom Hardy's performance, while others criticized the film for its plot and effects. But despite mixed reviews, the success of Venom paved the way for a sequel and made the character an important part of Sony's Spider-Man universe.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021) : The sequel with an iconic villain
After the success of the first film, the sequel "Venom: Let There Be Carnage" followed in 2021. The story picks up some time after the events of the first film and focuses on the continuing difficult relationship between Eddie and Venom as they try to coexist peacefully. But their partnership is put to the test when a new enemy emerges: Cletus Kasady, a serial killer who takes possession of a symbiote called Carnage.
Cletus Kasady, played by Woody Harrelson, is a menacing new character. The Carnage symbiote is a particularly aggressive mutation that draws its power from chaos and destruction, bringing the battle between Venom and Carnage to an action-packed and tense climax. The film also addresses the relationship between Eddie and Venom in a humorous way, adding a certain lightness to the dark and brutal tone.
"Let There Be Carnage" was directed by Andy Serkis, which stylistically sets the film apart from its predecessor. Serkis' experience with CGI and motion capture gave the symbiotes more impressive and dynamic movements. Reviews were mixed, but generally more positive than the first installment. The film was also a commercial success, grossing over 500 million dollars at the global box office despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
Venom: The Last Dance (2024) : The conclusion
"Venom: The Last Dance" is the third film in the Venom franchise and continues after the events of "Let There Be Carnage". The movie is about Eddie Brock's final battle against the powerful symbiote god Knull, known in the comics as the symbiotes' overpowering enemy.
Although the plot surprised some fans, "Venom: The Last Dance" was praised for its bold narrative approach. Tom Hardy also returned for this installment, once again bringing his unmistakable portrayal of Eddie Brock. Critics and viewers particularly discussed the ending of the film, which seemingly closes Eddie Brock's chapter in the Venom universe.
