Netflix officially announces the live-action series for the anime classic One Piece
The Showrunner will be an "X-Files" author.
Millions of fans belong to the fanbase of the anime hit One Piece. Now Netflix has announced a live action series about the pirate with the straw hat. So Netflix will not release an anime, as has often been assumed in the past, but a live action film. So far it is known that the streaming giant has commissioned a first season with ten episodes. According to the deadline, Tomorrow Studios and Shueisha are responsible for the production. The show runner of the series will be The X-Files and CSI: Miami screenwriter Steven Maeda. Together with author and producer Matt Owens, he will be responsible for the creative framework of the series.
One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda will also be involved as executive producer. As the latter announced on Twitter, plans for a live-action series were supposed to have been made three years ago, but since the work behind the scenes took quite some time, the series has only now been officially confirmed.
Netflix, which already has the live-action in-house productions Death Note and Cowboy Bebop among its exclusive content, has now secured One Piece, one of the most popular anime brands ever. But the real-life series is unlikely to be a run-of-the-mill success, because on the one hand One Piece will stretch Netfliix' budget with its fantasy elements and special effects, and on the other hand it is important to convince millions of One Piece fans worldwide of the idea of a real-life series, which is certainly viewed critically.
A release date is unfortunately not yet known.
