Bloodsport: Remake of the Jean-Claude Van Damme Classic Apparently in the Works at A24
Jean-Claude Van Damme is not expected to be involved
New rumor about a cult classic: According to The InSneider, the 80s martial arts film "Bloodsport" could get a remake – produced by the renowned film studio A24.
"Bloodsport", released in 1988 and starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, is an action film that quickly became a classic of the martial arts genre. The story follows Frank Dux, an American soldier who participates in a secret martial arts tournament in Hong Kong to honor his mentor. The movie is most famous for its impressive fight scenes.
Sneider now reports that A24 is in negotiations for the rights for a "Bloodsport" remake. As the rights situation is only just being taken care of, no actors or director can be announced yet. However, Sneider claims to have learned that Jean-Claude Van Damme will not be involved in the remake.
The combination of A24 and the remake of an action classic is particularly surprising. In recent years, the studio has become known primarily for its unconventional and often award-winning films such as "Hereditary", "Moonlight", "Everything Everywhere All At Once" and "Midsommar".
However, A24 has been planning to move into new areas and genres for some time. For example, the studio is also planning a live-action adaptation of the video game "Death Stranding", as you can read here. So it will be interesting to learn how A24 would realize a remake of "Bloodsport" – once the rights situation has been clarified.
