There's some good news for all "Street Fighter" fans: Legendary Entertainment has found a new director for its upcoming live-action film adaptation of the fighting game.

As the trade magazine Deadline reports, Kitao Sakurai will be directing the film. He is known for "Bad Trip" and his work on "The Eric Andre Show", for example. He takes over from "Talk to Me" directors Danny and Michael Philippou, who had joined the project in April 2023. However, they are no longer involved.

The film adaptation is based on the Capcom video game series of the same name, which was first published in 1987. The series has sold over 55 million copies worldwide and is one of the most iconic franchises in video game history. The focus is on intense one-on-one battles and a global tournament organized by M. Bison, the leader of the criminal organization Shadaloo. Specific details of the movie's plot are still unknown.

This is not the first time that "Street Fighter" is being adapted for the big screen. Back in 1994, Universal Pictures released a film adaptation starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Kylie Minogue, but it never left a lasting impression. In 2009, it was even listed by Time Magazine as one of the worst video game adaptations of all time. Now it will be interesting to see whether the new adaptation can convince audiences more. "Street Fighter" will be released in movie theaters on March 20, 2026.
