Netflix has launched an "Avatar: The Last Airbender" live-action series. Like the cartoon, it tells the story of young Aang and his journey from a young Air Nomad to the mighty Avatar. But the streaming giant is not the only one with an "Avatar" project: the creators of the original series are also working on an animated movie to be released in theaters. In this article, we have compiled all the information you need to know about the upcoming movie.

Development and Production

For a long time, there were in fact no plans for a new animated version. But fans of the show can consider themselves lucky: series creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko originally shared responsibility for the creation of the live-action series. However, there were recurring creative differences between them and Netflix. As a result, the two have left the project and want to focus on the core values of the animated series once again.

They have also managed to get other familiar names to join them. As with the original series, Lauren Montgomery will be the director. A total of three new movies are to be made. The first will revolve around the group of Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph and Zuko. The second film will then focus more on the adult fire lord Zuko, and the third film will feature the next Avatar Korra as the protagonist. Korra was previously given her own series with "Avatar: The Legend of Korra", which was set 70 years after the events of the first series.

Plot

As for the plot, it is already known that there will be a time jump after the series finale. So we're talking about an actual "Avatar: The Last Airbender" sequel! This means that the four protagonists will most likely have grown up. What adventures they will encounter definitely remains exciting. It could, for example, be about the emergence of the United Republic of Nations. In any case, we are very much looking forward to discovering new stories involving Aang.

There is, however, one change that fans will first have to get used to: While the old series were still released entirely in 2D, the film studio wants to rely more on CGI for the new movies. We will therefore see a mixture of classic 2D and CGI animation. Hopefully fans of the classic will be able to get used to it.

The first "Avatar: The Last Airbender" animated movie is scheduled for release in movie theaters on October 10, 2025, with the second one to follow in 2026. We have yet to get our hands on a first trailer or images. As soon as there is any news about the project, we will of course let you know!
