The popular trading card game "Magic: The Gathering" is to be made into a movie! And not only a movie or a series are being planned, but also an entire movie and series universe. This news was announced by Hasbro and Legendary, who want to work together on the fantasy project.

"Magic: The Gathering" is one of the biggest trading card games in the world. Be it in a private setting or at tournaments and world championships - "Magic" has been hugely popular for a long time. Since its first release in 1993, the play world has been steadily growing.

What Is Known Already?

Hasbro and Legendary have announced that everything will kick off with a movie. It will then be followed by a series and further content. Legendary is therefore adopting a similar approach as they did with their adaptation of the "Dune" universe. This started in 2021 with Denis Villeneuve's first movie, which was followed by part 2 and a series on HBO.

Moreover, the studio states that they want to appeal to both long-time fans and new viewers with their multimedia universe. However, no further details about the project are known at the moment.

What's Next For Magic: The Gathering?

Legendary is not the only studio currently working on a "Magic" project. Netflix has been working on an animated series set in the world of the trading card game for a while now. As the Hollywood Reporter points out, the Russo brothers, known for their numerous MCU films, were originally set to be responsible for the series. However, creative differences behind the scenes are believed to have stood in the way. Since then, Terry Matalas has been appointed as showrunner. He previously took on this function for "Star Trek: Picard" and the series adaptation "12 Monkeys".

The "Magic: The Gathering" universe is therefore expanding further. Only time will tell whether it makes sense to realize so many projects at once. Some time is likely to pass before we can see any initial results.

Adaptations of Fantasy Worlds

Adaptations of fantasy worlds have become increasingly common in recent years. Every film studio and every streaming service is looking for the next "Lord of the Rings" or "Game of Thrones". Here, we would like to introduce you to some of the adaptations:

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

One of the most popular fantasy worlds is J.R.R. Tolkien's "Middle-earth". Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" film trilogy in particular made Middle-earth world-famous. In 2022, the world of hobbits, elves and dwarves returned with the series "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" on Amazon Prime Video. Set thousands of years before the events of "The Lord of the Rings", this series explores the creation of the famous Rings of Power and the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron.

House of the Dragon

"Game of Thrones" has revolutionized the fantasy landscape and created a huge fan base that is still engaged with the stories from Westeros today. Following the success of "Game of Thrones", the series "House of the Dragon" was released in 2022, a prequel that tells the story of House Targaryen. The series highlights the Targaryen civil war, also known as the "Dance of the Dragons", and introduces new characters from the known world. With impressive dragon battles, political intrigue and a dark atmosphere, the series has been able to build on the success of "Game of Thrones". The third season of the fantasy series can be expected in 2026.

In the meantime, "GoT" fans can content themselves with "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight" in 2025. The third series from the world of Westeros is also based on a novel by George R.R. Martin. "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" is set around a century before "Game of Thrones" and tells the story of the adventures of Ser Duncan and his squire Egg.

The Witcher

The world of Andrzej Sapkowski's "The Witcher" is known through the book series of the same name, video games and the popular Netflix series. Since the release of the first season in 2019, the series, which follows the adventures of the witcher Geralt of Rivia, has thrilled an international audience. Season after season, however, the series has faced increasing criticism. For the upcoming fourth season, even the original lead actor and audience favorite Henry Cavill is no longer part of the cast. From now on, the role of Geralt will be played by Liam Hemsworth.
