New images from "The Odyssey"! Christopher Nolan's action epic is one of the most eagerly anticipated films of 2026. Fortunately, Entertainment Weekly shared some new impressions. A new photo shows Odysseus in full battle gear. The King of Ithaca is known to be played by Hollywood star Matt Damon. He is flanked by his comrades Eurylochus and Cepheus, played by Himesh Patel and Jimmy Gonzales.

We also get a fresh look at Anne Hathaway as Penelope and Tom Holland as Telemachus. The wife and son of Odysseus can be seen together in one picture. Robert Pattinson appears as the antagonist Antinous, who has his sights set on Penelope in Odysseus' absence.

A whole series of images were released just a few weeks ago. That usually means: The trailer is not far off! A first teaser was already shown in selected cinemas over the summer. Most recently, a prologue was also shown immediately before IMAX screenings of "Sinners" and "One Battle After Another". We hope that we will soon be able to present you with the first footage from "The Odyssey". According to insiders, the trailer for "The Odyssey" was expected to run alongside "Avatar 3: Fire and Ash". However, that film has since been released, and we are still waiting. As soon as it is available, you will of course find the trailer on YouTube and in the KinoCheck app! "The Odyssey" will be released in cinemas on July 17, 2026.

What happens in the first Odyssey trailer

The first teaser from the summer has not yet been released, but we do know what can be seen and heard in it. It starts with calm shots of the sea and beach. This is accompanied by a narrator's voice speaking the following words:

"Darkness. Zeus' law smashed to pieces. A kingdom without a king since my master died. He knew it was an unwinnable war. And then, somehow... somehow he won it."

As the story progresses, images of beach and ocean landscapes alternate between day and night. A destroyed wooden horse can also be seen, most likely the legendary Trojan horse. The voice off-screen probably belongs to John Leguizamo's character Eumaeus.

The teaser then shows Holland's Telemachus and Jon Bernthal at a table in the firelight for the first time. Odysseus' son goes in search of his father after the end of the Trojan War. He talks about this with Bernthal's character, who is apparently supposed to accompany him on his journey. The latter emphasizes that he has not heard from Odysseus since the end of the war. When Telemachos follows up, he replies:

"Interested in rumor, huh? Gossip. Who has a story about Odysseus, huh? You? You have a story? Some say he's rich or some say he's poor. Some say he perished. Some say he's imprisoned. What say you?"

At the same time, the teaser shows further short impressions, including night-time scenes with soldiers in a city. The teaser concludes with the revelation of Odysseus' whereabouts: the king of Ithaca, played by Matt Damon, is floating on some wooden planks in the middle of the open sea. The 80-second teaser thus provides the first moving images of Matt Damon as Odysseus, Tom Holland as Telemachus and Jon Bernthal.

The fact that the first moving images from "The Odyssey" will initially be shown exclusively in the cinema is very much in keeping with Christopher Nolan. The director sees himself as a clear advocate of cinema and develops his films specifically for the big screen. Nolan took a similar approach with his last blockbuster "Oppenheimer", the first teaser for which was also initially only shown in cinemas.

This is what The Odyssey is about

Homer's famous "Odyssey" serves as the basis for the ambitious project. The epic was likely written in the 8th century BC, making it one of the oldest surviving literary works in human history. At its center is the legendary hero Odysseus, king of Ithaca, who fights on the side of the Greeks in the Trojan War. He is known for his cunning – after all, the idea of the Trojan Horse goes back to him.

But his pride in this trick provokes the wrath of Poseidon, the god of the sea. As punishment, he turns Odysseus' journey home into a ten-year odyssey. Along the way, the hero has to pass numerous tests and face dangerous adventures. Among other things, he encounters a Cyclops, beguiling sirens and terrifying sea monsters. Fans of great epics and Greek mythology can therefore look forward to an extraordinary cinematic experience.
